I was told by F&G that the area around Carlsbad is very good. Esp. down along the Pecos Rv. area...ranchers are happy to have folks hunt them.
However, check on line about this as these critters have parasites and other possible health problems..

I was looking into hunting them also so let me know what you find out etc.

The Javelina is a permit only hunt, apply by April 8 of this year, and pay a full fee up front.

Ferral hogs...no permit required. Hunting lic re'qd, I think, can't remember.

Happy trails,

HW

i tried hunting one time with a bow and arrow... big mistake. You can't just end it there... I remember as a kid, one of my Dad's friends went bear hunting with a bow, on horseback. Just those few words should tell you how that story ended!! His horse threw him, bear killed the dogs or maimed them seriously and he had to defend himself with a pistol he carried as "back-up".

well yes, i was a kid too, and so not strong enough to give an arrow enough force to kill anything. I pretty much scared them away every time i shot in their direction. aim was horrible, tactics were weak, and my parents just watched me make a fool outta myself.

At least you scared them away instead of just making them mad. I just keep thinking of the "Ol' Yeller" story when I hear about people hog-hunting!

Thumbs up Re: hog hunting in NM...

Went to Ark last yr. and got a nice one about 125 lbs...just right for the BBQ and it was goooooodd...smoked the hams and they were great.

I want to go in NM and heard that the area down around Carlsbad...Pecos RV is good...farmers don't want them around.

ONe point to find out about, I am researching, is re: whether they are ok to eat,,,BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LOT OF PARASITES AND DISEASE..

Anyway's let me know what you find out... QUESTION FOR SOGGY..Are you in the Seattle area??? I lived on Whidbey for over 30 yrs.?

HW.....my .375 win...(marlin) worked great...

Hunter World - I WAS in the Seattle area - we lived in UW student housing for a few years, then in Maple Valley for 9 then Monroe for 2.5 before moving to Bernalillo (north of Albuquerque) in Sept. We visited Whidbey several times while we were up there (from 1993 to 2008).

Around Olney, TX we saw lots of dead hogs on the hwy there where they had been hit by cars and my brother-in-law traps them in OK, along the Red River.
