I don't "think" New Mexico feels dangerous either?
Of course having a "gut-feeling" about something, isn't the same as staring hard-data in the face.
Now dangerous, is working in one of Wash., DC's poorest neighborhoods for almost three decades.
When you and your co-workers, have to hide behind your vehicles in the company parking lot, to escape the latest neighborhood shoot-out.....well.....you get my point?
Yes, Sierra Blanca and the surrounding area is sacred (you missed the joke about scared, sorry), but if it's THAT sacred, what are they doing allowing a ski area on it?
Not to derail the topic even further than it has been, but what right do we have to judge what a sovereign community does with their own land? Many Native American tribes have excellent business models that both make loads of money, and, more importantly, pump that money to where it needs to be the most- back into the community.
I agree, I've been all around this country of ours and I've seen the good and the bad, but no city or state I have ever been to "felt" dangerous, and I have been to crime ridden cities like Newark, Detroit, Birmingham, New Orleans, Oakland and a few other infamous cities, but I never felt I was in danger at all.
I've never felt like I was in danger anywhere but I've been to inner cities and to the Bronx after it was burned out and they didn't seem like places I'd want to be out walking around after midnight. I've walked through parts of cities in Mexico where you had to step over people laying on sidewalks - passed out from drinking I think but I didn't check to make sure that's all it was or San Francisco where the homeless people seem rather on the crazy side. In some urban areas, you see certain kinds of people out loitering in groups and they don't look like the kind you'd want to meet up with at 2 am.
New Mexico isn't like those places. It seems safer so it's odd that it's ranked high in violent crime. If you're out camping, you think it's only bears and mountain lions you have to worry about - I think that is the case.
However I've always thought driving through NM at night was perfectly safe - except for those bears and mountain lions but I've read that rest areas aren't particularly safe in NM -- rest areas I've stopped at driving through the night. Then you wonder how safe it is if you're driving through the night and become stranded - or is the risk just in certain cities and towns?
Don't believe the false charts the top three most dangerous states is California, Texas, and Florida. These 3 stated have the highest gun realated murders.
