Yes, the problem is if the cities in NM get very big and the state becomes very crowded, then it loses everything it had going for it. Imagine NM with the forests cut down for high rises, big shopping malls like they have in Minnesota, sky scrapers obstructing the view of mountains and expressways going everywhere.

Already the yipping of coyotes is getting to be too rare, the wide open spaces less wide open. You can't hike up in the mountains without bumping into someone.

To make it worse, my health insurance is from the military so it made me wonder why the military was taking in these idiots.
We are planning a move this year to Alamogordo, and will be going on Medicare and carrying supplemental insurance. Sure hope we don't run into this kind of problem. We love the climate, spectacular scenery, history, clear skies and all.........and husband spent 24 years in Roswell before moving to Texas. He is anxious to move back to New Mexico, and I am ready for a new adventure. Hoping to find an arts community in Alamo, but so far, no luck.

Not to disparage T or C but we, I at least, are looking at Socorro for a retirement home.

When people ask, why Mexico?, I put on a realy bad spanish accent and tell them that is where the built the bomb. Most conversations stop at that point.

DH lived in Hobbs while we were dating and still does most all of his business in New Mexico. While we were dating I was living in Dallas. One weekend I was planning of flying out for a visit. This girl I worked with asked my if I spoke Spanish. I said "no". At first I didn't think much about the question, but the she asked if my boyfriend (now DH) spoke Spanish. I told her "no" and she looked really confused. She asked how he could work there if he couldn't speak the language and I explained that everyone spoke English. Then she muttered something about it must be because he worked for an American company. Then she asked me if I needed to go on my lunch hour to the bank and convert some money to pesos. Now I'm the one looking confused. I asked her why did she think I would need to do that. She said "when I went to Mexico they wouldn't take my dollars and I had to have Pesos, but I guess since its a border town, they must take US Dollars." I tried to explain to her that Hobbs was in the US state of New Mexico. She was shocked. I few months later I was flying out to go skiing with DH in Taos, and I went through the same thing with her again. She was like "I didn't know they had mountains and snow in Mexico". I just gave up at that point.

Makes you wonder if they even went to any form of civilized schooling since learning the States of this country starts as early as 1st grade in some States. Sad really.
