Also when you drive down from ABQ to San Antonio head south at the only traffic light in town (nm 1) and go about 15 to 20 minutes and follow the signs to historic Ft. Craig. Its on the Rio Grande and although none of the buildings exist the walls still stand and you can take a self guided tour and at different points picture plaques show you what you would have been looking at.
It was built in 1854 and was one of the largest forts in the wild west back then. Most do not know that there was one of the most western battles of the Civil War took place there at the battle of valverde. Also housed a regiment of Buffalo soilders of the 9th and 10th calvary.

6/3! Thanks for putting that up. My friend in Hagerman has encouraged me to tour it, gonna give it a shot! I'll probably stop and stay the night at Motel 6-BTW, (off topic), did they move the Hastings CD/video store? It's easy to buy some road music, I heard they moved across town. True?

I don't know where Hastings was once located, but they were putting up the new building the summer I moved here. It's now at the intersection of White Sands Blvd and 10th Street.

newmex wonders:
> Is there a long line if you decide on your own transportation?
Yes. The line can stretch out for miles with cars riding your bumper,
sometimes hundreds of yards behind you. Occasionally, you might
drive into the dust of the car in front of you if you don't manage
to maintain your distance.
Trinity Site
> How early should you get there?
# Visitors can enter through the range's Stallion Range Center
# which is five miles south of Highway 380.
# The turnoff is 12 miles east of San Antonio, N.M. ,
# and 53 miles west of Carrizozo, N.M. The Stallion gate
# will be open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors arriving at the gate
# between those hours will receive handouts and will be
# allowed to drive unescorted the 17 miles to Trinity Site.
# The road is paved and marked.
Nothing about pets, but at the dates that the site is open,
leaving them in the car with the windows cracked should
be fine for them.

As I recall it was further down 10th street, between Hawaii and Puerto Rico Ave. That was 4 years ago.

I've been on this tour, and dogs were allowed, at least when I was there 3 years ago. There is are no traffic worries whatsoever. What is more fun is counting the number of out of state plates. I've never seen so many.
