Check out this quote from a high school football coach in the DC area about his player (Yeager) committing to play for the Lobos and their new head coach (Locksley).
"It was a surprise to me when I spoke to Yeager and he told me he was speaking to Locksley," Lane said. "Locksley came in and he spoke with the guys. I don't know what he said to make them make that decision. But it's the decision they made and it was solely on their own and one they have to live with. [New] Mexico is not like the States. It's a different scneario in New Mexico. But it's the decision they decided to make and I'm going to help them in any way to get there and be successful.
Do high school coaches out there also need to be teachers? If so, that's scary that a teacher doesn't even know NM is a state!
I have had this happen to me in MN..when I say I am going to visit my relatives in NM, they say "Oh, I have a friend who went to Mexico", or "do you use dollars down there or Mexico money" (as I stare back at them while picking up my jaw from the floor, amazed at their lack of knowledge)....It's usually older people who say this stuff, I guess NM really wasn't a state until 1912, maybe their school textbooks hadn't been updated or something when they learned about the US states haha. I always set them straight, though....."No, I am going to NEW Mexico, it is a state, we do have electricity, running water, we drive cars there, and we do use the US dollar as currency."
I don't usually post, but this topic interests me. Maybe they get confused because they saw the movie Tracks. It came out in the 70's. This guy was trying to sell some land in New Mexico to the character played by Dean Stockwell. Dean goes "But I don't have a passport." Of course he was kidding.
There are 50 states? When did that happen? When I was growing up there were only 40 or so. You know - six rows of eight stars - whatever that is. Is New Mexico one of them? Wow!

Why, yes, we all know New Mexico is a star? right??? tell me we did...
No, These are not educated people, they just think they are and are good at convincing others of the fact. As an immigrant I find it quite extraordinary how Americans are so smart in some ways and yet so lacking in others. Generally they are incredibly innovative and patriotic, but at the same time so blissfully unaware of the rest of the world. In addition to the examples already listed, I have asked high school students what ocean is to the East of the US and they did not have a clue. To the West, same result. Who is at fault? The ones who claim to do so much for so little and always manage to convince everyone else that they are underpaid, Teachers. It's time they started earning the respect they have been demanding for so long.
