I don't have the patience to make tamales myself. I'd probably make the meat cooked and then it would go bad sitting in the refridgerator waiting for me to figure out the rest of the recipe.
I may try the ones from Chama. I never know what to get dh. He loves tamales. I think the price would be okay for a special surprise.
I know this great website called homemade-tamales dot com were you can order frozen tamales. The tamales are made by Hispanic ladies living in Texas. I've ordered from them and they are good. The tamales are pretty big too. They come packaged in a Styrofoam cooler packed with ice packs.
My mom is 88 and loves to make them. But she doesn't like to eat them!
That could be out of habit. I also consider it a "Motherly" thing. My mom is 93 and loves to cook but eats very little. You can see she is happy feeding people...
I know this is probably going to seem absurd, but there is a guy in Tulsa that makes tamales. David is from Chimayo/Truchas, and has introduced eastern OK to the real thing.
Only those who are crazy about tamales will do that.....so labor-intensive!
True that. It's a great family/friends cook though. Have someone prep the filling day before, and then get together in the morning to mix masa and make tamales. Everyone takes a station (I prefer 'inspector 12') and then just catch up on gossip and have a good time. Before you know it, everyone can go home with a couple dozen.

That is definitely the way to do it, LOL!!
