Just bird-eyed Vaughn.
I question the mental swiftness of
anyone there that is not drunk.

A lot of homeless shelters do that. They take in homeless who agree not to use drugs and drink.

In part it's pretty dangerous to the homeless to have to stay with the drunks and drugged up. Drunk and drugged tend to get very rowdy, are dangerous.

Self-treatment with alcohol is certainly not an inexpensive route to go. People who have money to buy a whole lot of beer and liquor have money, they just have their priorities screwed up. Impoverished can mean you have $30 a day for alcohol, or $100 a day for drugs but $0 for food for your kids.

On post #12 Mike 0421 nails it on the issue of Vaughn's motel situation. They are a rough lot, though there are a couple of good ones there. While driving through to visit a buddy south of Roswell, I tried to get ahead of a storm. Wrong! Spent the night at Vaughn as 285 was shut down at the port of entry 2 miles south of town. Elevation is close to 6000 ft. and it DOES snow in March there! It's an old railroad town that time has passed by, for sure.

It just seems like a no-win situation. Is it preferable to have them sleeping in alleyways or park benches or what have you? I don't really know the answer to this question, I'm sort of just typing out loud...
