Default Will see you soon!

We are moving to Clovis in June from Eglin AFB Florida, part of the AFSOC move. We have been stationed at Ramstein,GE and went straight to England. If we can live in England surrounded by farms, fields and nothing for 3 years and still not be in America, we are golden! It was an hour drive to the base in England and that was living in base housing! The only available ones there were in the sticks for some reason. I grew to like the isolation and bonded with my son and husband. We travelled and had lots of fun BBQ parties and made friends. It was really kinda cool.

My biggest concern is the schools as my one son will only have 1 yr left in elementary school before middle school. I promised to home school him if I had to but we can't sell our house and to rent will cost us money out of pocket each month. I will need to work. My best hope is that we can sell our house in a year maybe. I liked your post, it makes the move seem even more adventurous. We have loved meeting all the people as we have moved. I am a native of the area where we are now, my whole family is here. We didn't chose this move but it will be temporary and we will make it the best for us all. LOL about the cleaning out garage thing! Don't these people know that we are not rich either? Everyone has it bad right now.

Take care!

Florida Out!

Great post! We just Got to Cannon on Dec 12th and our last base was Germany too so I could relate. We saw a state trooper at a gas station on the ride to cannon a few towns before and he asked where we were headed. We told him and he said,"now when you see it you will want to turn around and leave but just keep on going I promise it will get better" When we got in the car I told my hubby it has got to be bad when a state trooper gives you a warning.

I was the most concerned about the school system too even though my daughter has yet to start but from what people are saying is is not as bad as we had heard. Plus they also have a few private schools to choose from too if you are wanting to look into to those. I was pleased to find out that it was not as bad as we had expected and Portales is the cutest little town. I am in love with my house. I live in one that is 5 mins from base and loving it makes life so much easier. The spouse group that is open to everyone now has a website and they have a several different groups that meet like a playgroup and a walking group etc Special Activitie.
Cafemom has a Canon moms group too Cannon AFB, MOMS - CafeMom hope these help a little.

My husband was just offered a job in Clovis, NM. We currently live in El Paso, TX, so we are used to the climate. The bigger issue for me is that we live in an area that combined has over 1 million people. It's going to be kinda of a shocker for me to move to an area with less than 50,000 people in it. We are probably only going to be in Clovis for a year or two, so we are nervous about buying a house then getting stuck not being able to sell it fast enough, so we thought we'd look at rental houses, but I'm not finding much on the web. Any suggestions from anyone? We have a four year old, so I'm wanting to be near a good elementary since he'll start preschool soon. Also, we really prefer newer houses with neighborhoods with lots of kids. I've been reading the posts, and it seems like Portales is actually nicer than Clovis. Is that true? Help please!!!

Check out Combs Properties in Portales. He is building nice new rentals behind the Super Save called Foxtrail Estates. I lived in one of them, nice place and quiet.

Talking Hello

Hello all - first, let me say that after reading your post Fickle, my husband and I are definitely alot more interested in moving to Cannon than we were before! We've been in Omaha, Nebraska since he returned from Korea in March 2006. He was willing to volunteer for Korea again to get us a better assignment, but after much deliberation, we aren't really looking to be seperated again (he just returned from a 7 month deployment about 6 weeks ago).

To any of those there now, do you have regrets at all for going there? We've been trying to find housing floor plans online, but haven't found very many (the ones we have found appear to be dated). Does anyone know where we can find any, or have a link to a website for the community? If there's a place to locate some photos of what the housing looks like there as well (inside and out), that would be awesome too. We would prefer to live in Portales if possible. We have 3 girls (6, 4, and 2), so we'd qualify for a 4 bedroom and I am currently going to school for nursing, but have done FCC Daycare from our home before, and may do it again. We love neighborhood gatherings, bbq's and fire pit parties as we've learned to call them...and my husband is a GREAT griller/cook. Hopefully it'll work out and we'll be there in just over a year...we're sure ready to get out of this frozen weather (it is 9 degrees right now as I type)! We look forward to maybe seeing you all in a year!

Jenn and Charles

I just read in the clovis paper over the weekend about how the expected growth from 2,000 to 5,000 airmen at Cannon AFB will have the town booming as they were talking about new housing, apartments and shopping getting ready to build up all over clovis.

I know you said you would prefer Portales, but I have posted several sets of photos of Clovis, including one called Around the Neighborhoods which will show you a lot of exterior shots of homes. Just click on the little photograph icon under my name at the top of this message.

Clairz I do respect you as a person and as someone that loves Clovis.

I just think its odd how 1/2 of the town doesnt even slightly resemble the pictures of the houses you have in your albums. Those houses have to be from the way north part of town, or out in the sticks.

1/2 of the town looks bad and it looks crime ridden. HOWEVER the other 1/2 looks like a nice little town.

They are building a lot of new homes here.. and when asked by the base commander who did they think would buy those homes.. the reply was, "All of the Generals and Col". To their dismay we havent any Generals and the Col's have to live on base. So there are a lot of new homes... in the 300k and up range.

They have supposedly started to build homes for around the E-5ish budget. Too bad they are just now catching onto this, or we might of bought a home here.
