(Sylvan learning center type help) The other one is 14 and has a written output disorder and needs remedial writing help. He may fall into a dyslexia subset. He currenty has an aide for assistance in class and for pull out testing or assignment completion. Is there something along the lines of Sylvan?? Both are on IEP's and are above average IQ's. One is gifted with a learning disorder and the other is listed as right brain cognitive dysfuntion. I fear this base will not be able to address these needs so I am updating the EFMP today. (Older one has an anxiety issue as well and the other gets really overwhelmed in bigger schools)
I do not think that Clovis/Cannon would be a good place for your family's needs. I would do everything I could to not come here, if I were in your shoes.

Fickle,

Thanks for you your honest input. I am working what I can on this end to stop us from getting orders to Cannon because of the education issues. I just do not see the resources that my children need being easily provided or driving 100 miles for a Sylvan learning center.

Our other choice is Grand Forks ND. From my research, they have great schools with a lot of resources for the boys. I just hate the cold...burrrr.

For anyone with answers!

My fiance received an offer for a class at Cannon... He turned it down for the simple fact that he's deployed at the moment and we wouldn't have enough time to even get the house ready to sell. We would have had to leave OK no later than July 15. And he wants to get married before that, too (I tend to take the long way around when asking a question, giving every detail like it matters!). Anyway... I'm wondering if anyone can give me information on rent houses/duplexes. Just for the time being. When we do end up moving there. We have two cats (no kids). I have been looking all over the internet though and I'm coming up with nothing. I know we will move there, I just don't know when. So it does make it hard to contact anyone with these questions.

I was just thinking that maybe someone would have a suggestion. Anything will help to be honest.

Thanks!!

He is coming here for a class? How long would you need the house/rental for? Honestly all I can think of would be to contact a realtor or come here and see for yourself. Rentals are iffy here.

He's going into Gunships. So he will go through the training then do gunships as a job I guess. So we will be there for a long while. We have a friend that has been out there since November 2010. He said the same thing about finding a realtor. I guess we will have to wait and see. It just sucks because what I have found do not allow pets. We have 2 animals. Hmmm. I guess when the time comes we will have to make a trip out there to find something. It's just easier to get a head start if you can.

Poodle I totally understand! Maybe you will find a place here quick. Seeing how you do not have any kids will be a plus! That way you dont have to narrow your search beacuse of a school etc.

Send me a message when you get in!

You too H!

Just got back from a whirlwind NM trip. DH was TDY to Kirtland, so I flew out to join him. After enjoying a day and a half in ABQ, we headed over to Clovis. We were only there for about 24 hours, but our main goals were to check out the housing situation and for DH to visit his new unit (as well as look for old friends from his old unit! he found more than he expected!)

Glad we set our expectations low...there were things that were worse than we thought, as well as some things that weren't so bad. Lodging on base was pretty nice, and we actually enjoyed the base (not that there's much, but I thought it was more aesthetically pleasing than Kirtland!) And there were actually more trees in Clovis than we expected! And shopping options were fine...not like a big city (I will miss Target!) but doable and sort of all located together.

We found out that we are only eligible to live in the Joe Cannon housing on base or 801 Clovis (which seem larger than on base.) Which is fine, if it's available...the housing office said that they are operating at about 90% or more capacity, so it's just a matter of what's available when we arrive. We also aren't required to live in base housing for a year before moving, so our hope is to get a house in 801 Clovis when we arrive and just wait until something decent and affordable pops up to rent. And snatch it fast!

It's just unbelievable that it's so hard to find decent, affordable housing. We just aren't willing to pay $500-600 or more over BAH at DH's rank. We were just really upset at the options, and we can't imagine what others who make less must feel like when they move there. We know we'll be okay, but I have to believe that there are younger families really hurting financially because of the housing issues.

We also decided that we weren't fond enough of Portales to live there...unless it was our only option. I can totally see us getting tired of the drive into town...even though it's not really all that far. But I think we'd be willing to make the drive to Portales for occasional college sports or things like that.

Anyway....I can't say I'm super excited about going there, but I'm glad we've got a few months to prepare ourselves. I really like Albuquerque, so we are looking forward to getting out of town when we can to visit over there, as well as other SW locations. And most of what we do these days is kid related...BBQ with friends, etc...so I'm sure we'll be fine.

Oh...it was WINDY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't expect that! Cuh-razy!!

It's been windy in Albuquerque during this last month (April). I briefly saw in the paper that the month broke all past records for wind. So I hope it will calm down.

In any event, welcome to New Mexico!
