$1200 is highway robbery for a rental in these parts unless it is a big place in a killer neighborhood. I think the best 3/2s in Foxtrails are less than 1000.

thanks for all the great info. We are PCSing from Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota to Cannon in June. We have decided to buy because we have 2 med size dogs. I do have a question about schools. My daughter is gonna be in 1st grade next year. What are the schools like? I'm not sure where we are gonna live yet, I need my husband to read all these posts first. We are looking on line at houses through[SIZE=-1]Max & Trinity RE/Max First Place!

Everyone we have met here in Clovis/Portales has been (For the most part) nice etc....

On that note... I would of never picked this place to live. I would of never picked these two towns to raise my kids in...

With that said, I am hoping that we get transferred out of here ASAP. I know that .. that will NOT happen.. just because we have just moved here in OCT.

I am used to a small town with hills and all four seasons. I have never moved to a place that warned about drugs so much that it made me worry about mine and my children's safety as much as Cannon AFB has.. Clovis.

This place is a joke and I am ready to move on. I am sure there are LOADS. TONS of people that love it here and call this place home. Good for you and I am happy you are home.

On that note...... I am not home. My kids are not home. Neither is my husband.

This base has caused me to turn... from trying to be hopeful and positive .. to totally anti-Cannon. I cannot wait to move from here and I am hoping that our marriage can survive this base/area.

Last little tid Bit... if you have a choice.. DO NOT choose this assignment. If you do NOT have a choice... shoot me a message and we can drink the nights away .. and have some fun doing it.

Public schools are decent in Portales and in North Clovis. Portales scores lower overall on the standardized tests because everyone in the same grade in Portales goes to the same school. But, as a result of this system, Portales Schools are newer and nicer, classes are small, and kids of different backgrounds learn to get along. Portales high schoolers can take university classes. The pre-K program at ENMU (Child Development Center) is tops and costs a fraction of the cost of a similar program in a larger town.

Clovis is divided into "good" and "bad" schools. South Clovis has some truly dismal schools in gang wannabe areas where some of the kids are a bit rougher. The rural towns (Ranchdale, Floyd, Dora ) have the best schools, amazingly good kids, but you are in the boonies. The two Christian Schools (Faith Triumphant in Portales and Clovis Christian) are preferred by some parents.

OVERALL: Clovis and Portales are typical small town public school districts, and only a couple of schools in Clovis are really awful, ther rest in Portales and Clovis are fine for your kid and very safe if you keep an eye out for normal behavior and keep them busy. I would say the overall quality of public schools here is "average" with less city violence and not a gang issue. Sports are bigger, and there are some honors programs. All the high schools will have some drugs, but a lot less than a similar school in a larger city. However, teenage pregnancy is still way too high in this region, and the schools need to get their heads out of the sand regarding sex education.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with (fill in the blank)Yardsales.com We came from Germany and we had Ramstein Yard Sales - Ramstein, Germany If you have not seen one before take a look at this one. They are a great way of selling your stuff without really having the "yard sale" and a even better way of buying used stuff because people are moving. Well we don't have one here but the site says that if enough people put in that that they are at Cannon AFB or any base and want one they will start one here is the the link
http://www.baseyardsales.com/basemap.jsp

So if you loved your last one or you are just tired of the junk
taking up space in your in your garage let them know we want one
here.
{{I don't own this site or make anything from you saying
want one I just saved a ton money and sold a ton of my junk on
the last one}}

Or, you can use freecycle.com, which already has a Clovis/Portales/Cannon group: The Freecycle Network - about the Clovis-Portales-Cannon Group

Gosh this is all just rather depressing (today anyway, other days I'm "we'll make the best of it")...we've been re-routed (asthma) to Nellis, but I think we'll end up at Cannon. I'm really thankful for all the info you guys have posted. Sure does help. We'll be pcsing in July, not much time to sell the house here etc. You'd think with the market as bad as it is, they'd freeze moves for a year or something. I've been looking at realtor.com, can't believe the housing prices around clovis..sheesh!

Yeah, we got orders to be there in June from Eglin/Hurlburt and we couldn't sell our house either. We rented to another military member and are using retired military guys for property managers. We are also still having to pay $480 a month out of pocket to cover the whole payment. It's not good for anyone. My son has asthma, I hope we are good there, Cannon. We are just planning to stay in base housing until the market changes in Fl enough to try to sell. Good luck! We are all feeling the pain.

Too funny, that's what I'm talking about! I will get up with ya when we get there. Did you get a house yet in Clovis? We are on the list for the 801 near Mesa, I hope we can get it.
Take care!
