New Mexico Is A Safe State
I keep hearing about how Unsafe N.M. is and maybe in places like Albuquerque and Santa Fe and a few other big Cities but to me the Center of N.M. is a Safe place to live. >>>>> If you want to see Crime and be a Victim of a crime walk the Streets of Los Angeles in the Daytime and that was back in the 70s i wonder how bad it is now? el pintada kid

The Crime Rate = Job Loss & Hard Times
While visiting a local store here in T or C about a month ago, plastered on the headline was "Crime in Albuquerque UP 20+%", it was the duke city rag, which I don't buy or read. I think the crime might have increased of late because of the hard times presently. If the economy gets any worse, crime indeed may go up in larger cities across the nation. But, even living in a small town with a population of 7,000 or so, doesn't mean that we don't lock our doors on our apartments/homes or cars, and we don't leave valuables lying around for easy pickin's. I think the last time we stopped locking our domain at night was about 30 years ago. not that locks on anything will make anyone safer, because if someone want's something bad enough, they'll get it, irregardless of how many locks you'll have. locks only keep honest people honest. I really don't see a problem with big crime occurring in smaller towns, most criminals live in more highly populated areas of the state, or nearby bigger cities in the USA. I also think people of smaller towns have a better way of grappling with hard economic times. In a recent Sierra County Newspaper, there was a story of how areas of smaller poplulations have a better way of coping with the economic downturn, and cited Sierra County as one of the areas in the State of New Mexico as not being nearly as adversely affected by hard times like some other counties, cities and states are. And so, while no city in New Mexico is comparable to LA, Chicago, New York, crime rates might still increase if hard times continue to be a problem. Unemployment is what? 7.2%. if the trend continues, we'll see much more crime on a grander scale nationwide. maybe even in our little humble domains in the boonies.

True, at least with lions, tigers, snakes and bears, you know what their weapons are and how you might survive, being faced with an armed robber is different and unpredictable, and their weapons of choice are guns, knives, clubs etc.. I think I'd take my chances with nature's danger anytime.

Bears love marshmallows. Talked with some rangers in Alaska who say don't leave home without them..while in bear country that is. The only problem is when you get a smarty-bear who figures out that scaring people = marshmallows.
But, at least you know what they're after. With the criminally minded of the human-types...not so easy to know - or deter. I'm with greg and mutz on this one. Give me the bears over the people- they're scary!

You really need to look at the statistics on why NM is rated unsafe. There are many factors, many of which may or may not apply to your situation or location in this very large state. NM may be rated as one of the most unsafe states, but unless you know the details the fact is pretty meaningless.

RE crime in NM...
All of the infor is based on stats. Stats are the measure and they are only as good as the population serveyed and the information in them. As an example if you have a population of 100 and 50 people have been subjected to some sort of crime then is the crime rate 50% or?
Down here in Fence Lake, pop ?? 100 or more depending on the area in the survey, and the crime is low, like an occassional burglery then the rate is low.
But take, Gallup, lots of burglery, DUI(crime), murder, rape, robbery, and other various degrees like shoplifting...then you factor in the degree of the crime and then if you are a good statistician you will come up with a figure.
Ya, LA in the 70's I worked in Law enforcement and it (we thought) was pretty bad in some areas.
IN Seattle in the 90's same thing....
re the animals vs. humans...having had to chase suspects into well you never know...and having knives pulled, a gun, and lots of take downs...I would always rather be in the woods .....in know when and where to be cautious..
like in the afternoon in the desert the "shaky tails come out"..
Anyway....today in NM is great....but crime can happy anytime, anywhere...
be safe...if you want to carry take the course and know what to do..
Still a cell phone, if in an area that it works....is a good choice....
whip it out and make the call, and make the information correct and urgent..
Happy trails, HW

good points. No, NM isn't all that unsafe, yes, they do have crime and not only in the cities you mention, but places like Gallup, but there are worse states for sure.
