The main thing I recall about them is how BRIGHT they are under sunlight. I could hardly stop my camera down far enough! If you take a photo of anything with White Sands as a background, the foreground object(s) will appear very dark. A fascinating area.

White Sands is so different than anyplace else that it can barely be described. We stayed on the boardwalks. Hiking in that place is way too intimidating for me and I do not intimidate easily.
They should be on anyone's to do list

Spectacular
I've just seen photos of White Sands on its website. It seems almost unworldly. I'll be there in late March and am eagar to see it first hand. Guess I better stay on those boardwalks though.

The coolest thing about White Sands (and that's saying a lot) is the midnight/full moon hours. When there's a full moon and it's clear they stay open till midnight. It's absolutely as bright as day and one of most amazing things I've ever witnessed.

White Sands does not disappoint!
We used to hike up the steep banks of the dunes and stray just far enough to keep the car in view.
I wish that I could have taken better pictures there, this is probably the best I have, and it was taken by a little disposable camera. Have to get back there with my new camera and take better shots.

Catman, the pics we have that my father took with his really good camera (a nice old Nikon) had the same issue. I am very light skinned (even while living in NM LOL!) and in those pics my skin looks very dark tan. That is with him using a light gauge and the fastest shutter speed on his camera too!

Don't try to hike there in the middle of the summer, it's way too hot! I've been there three or four times and we always drove through and stopped to play at different areas. Lots of fun to roll down the sand dunes. Did it when I was a kid and with my own kids twenty years later. But you could definitely get lost or have problems trying to hike there.
