Pintada Kid Tip On Wild Animals
We must always remember when we go hiking that Bears and other Animals can smell food for miles and when they are Hungry and you are out hiking you might smell like a human walking Cheeseburger to them. If you encounter a Bear or any other kind of Wild Animal that might be a Danger to you Drop your backpack or Shirt or cap anything that will buy you time to slowly get back to your Vehicle. Bears eat anything even their own and New Mexico Bears and Mountain lions are probably coming to McDonalds this year and they are not afraid of People like in Places where Bears have Plenty to eat. The New Modern Wild Animals are Watching us and soon New Mexico could turn into the New Jaws Movie. Maybe they will call it Fangs or something. We havent had much Moisture in a long time and so the Animals in the Wild are gonna be Hungry this year and they will probably be coming to town and inviting us to Lunch. Kid Tip...... If you Go Hiking dont go alone... Go With Somebody you can Outran. el pintada kid

I had to add to your suggestions about not hiking alone.
Make alot of noise, a bell, coach whistle, and now available in stores, a boat air horn. if confronted by an animal, make as much noise as possible, wave your arms, stomp your feet. never turn your back on a bear, or a cat, back away until at a safe distance to your vehicle or other shelter such as a vault toilet.
keep your foods in airtight containers locked inside a vehicle cargo area, never leave food scraps lying around, it's like the kid said, animals have a keen sense of smell, and oftimes, a keener hearing sense. burn all unused food scraps and packaging too. if in national parks or forests, use the bear resistant refuse containers, if those are not available, please pack your rubbish out when you leave. remember, try to keep rubbish and unused foods in airtight containers. be aware of forest rules for starting fires, some areas of new mexico may be under red flag warnings, and if unable to burn your rubbish, you'll have to dispose of it by other means.

We should have this thread moved with the other 9,009 Pintada Kid animal threads. lol
And I dont think New Mexico is in any danger of turning into the next "Jaws movie" because, well, big, abundant, saltwater bodies in NM are like glaciers in the Sahara. lol

Given that Pintada Kid's worries about carnivorous animals might be real I can only suggest being able to fight back. Just like in a city infested with human predators, I suggest, Be Aware, Be Alert and Be Armed.
If you are in a park where animal attacks might be likely, conceal the weapon and lie to the Rangers. Better to be fined by them than eaten by the bears. In any case only use the gun when the bells and whistles etc don’t work.

My 4 wheelin' buddy who recently relocated to roswell always carried a pea shooter .38 with him, it was easily concealed and very lightweight, which would probably get the job done protecting oneself. one doesn't need to carry an elephant gun to defend oneself, even a .22 would work. but with such small calibers, I wonder if confronted by a pretty good sized bear would only be riled up even more if the effect of pumping a slug into one doesn't kill it immediately. one could only hope that just the sound of the shot scares it off.

Bears and Guns
I would think that a 22 L.R. Hollow point well placed in the Eyesocket or at the Heart would bring down a bear but i dont know. Are there any Bear Hunters out there? el pintada kid

Not a bear hunter, but when I am out in bear country, I always have one of my buddies with me, either .45 Colt or .357 magnum. Mr. Bear might want my pack, but he's going to have to take a few slugs to get it.

I don't hike alone and I definatlely don't eat cheeseburgers before hiking. Too heavy on the stomach. Why not carry a steak or something with you and if you run into an animal, throw them the steak and head out the other direction?
So far I haven't seen any animals other than a brightly colored green snake. Don't know what kind he was or if he was poisonous as I didn't stick around to find out.
Speaking of cheeseburgers, if anyone gets to Alamogordo, there's a place called Hi De Ho. Great cheeseburgers.

Are you going to try that? How much range do you have with your 22 lr?
