There was no jury, it was small claims court.
And even if you don't get sued, if any animal welfare agency were to find out that you stood and watched and did nothing while an animal of yours killed another animal you would be fined. Animal cruelty is illegal no matter who's property you're on. Why are you having a hard time understanding that?

And why are YOU having a hard time understanding and reading my posts? I've already stated that my dogs have never killed a cat or any other anmial. There are leash laws in both NM and TX, and your friend probably would have lost the case on those alone in either of these two states.
She would have had a heck of a countersuit from me on leash laws and HER loose dog.
As Song stated, it's sometimes difficult to break up a fight. I've had to go to the emergency room afterhours to get stitches...and to add a much worse cat bite to that....no thanks. We already know what happens with serious cat bites, as one unfortunate poster has shared his story with us.
When it comes to someone else's loose cat or dog that they let run, I will NOT place it ahead of my own or my dog's welfare. To expect me to do so is idiotic.

I have to admit I don't like outdoor cats. They do so much damage to song birds. Plus they carry nasty diseases. I have no use at all for roaming cats.

Very cute kitty.
I would never own an outside cat in NM. The risk of them becoming coyote bait is too high. Plus being inside they aren't exposed to diseases, fleas, ect.

Dangerous Animals
What lots of these animal lovers dont get that in New Mexico there are plenty of Rattlesnakes and Cats and Wild Animals and Skunks and Dogs that soon they become harmful to people and have to be Destroyed. >>>> Who in their right mind would let a Rattlesnake go or try to catch it to set it free somewhere else? New Mexico is over half forest and mountains and theres plenty of danger out there in these places without letting the danger come to town.P.S.>>>> My Dogs do a very good service for the Area by letting people know when a Stranger is around and they stay in their yard but other peoples dogs and cats come to bother them so when they have a Chance to sneak out without my permission they will but its rare. KID TIP... A Rattlesnake Bite can Cost you 50 thousand dollars and you will not be the Same again. I have no Idea what an Infectious Cat Bite would cost? Or A Rabid Dog or Skunk? So to all you Animal Lovers come to New Mexico and Pick up your pets before My Half Wolf Dog finds them. el pintada kid

only annoying, they can be really bad news, too.
Get out the fence repair work gloves and bathe the cat...

Better yet, make your cat an indoor cat (exclusively) and you won't have to worry about these issues, nor his getting run over by a car, nor killed or maimed by a dog or neighborhood brats, etc.
Indoor cats live considerably longer than outdoor cats for a very good reason and the also won't pee on your neighbor's property.

Yep, It is my Grandaughters. I think Edward was 4 weeks old. I don't have cat's. I don't hate cat's. I have dogs. But, I considered taking Edward with me. Here are my buddies....
Growing up, we had a chicken, a turtle and a parakeet. Anyone remember when they use to inject chicken eggs with food dye so you would have Colored Easter chicks? They usually died. Mine live for several years.
My dogs are inside dogs. Have been to several training/obedience classes and were rescued dogs. They have had all their shots and been to the vet as appropriate. It's been that way with all my dogs for over 20 years. Now I will be polite and say no more...

I have had to deal with plenty of roaming animals here in NM. They usually come onto my place and cause harm to my animals or livestock. The best remedy for me has always been a shotgun. It's quick, effective, humane and legal.

The ASPCA has absolutely no jurisdiction in the state of New Mexico.

In fact they don't want to hear from you on the issue outside of New York City. But you can donate money to them.
So I wonder if I should bother to read the remainder of your posts.
If you want to know how to handle it in New Mexico, I will tell you if you are nice to me. I have taken people to court six times on some of these issues. And had a few other issues favorable resolved.

I'm not happy about reading that in Timberon, dogs and cats run free. Cats are virtually harmless to humans (except for allergies), but loose dogs can be dangerous to all concerned. I had a run-in with a couple of big loose dogs earlier today.
Those who dump animals deserve a special place in Hades. Ditto for those who allow them to have litter after litter, with no thought to the survival of the young. There is a huge overpopulation of dogs and cats. I think there are too many people too, and population control is much needed, but that's another matter.
|
Oh wow, Catman. Dogs and cats run loose all the time here. There's at least a dozen dogs in my yard daily. I like the fact that most of them like to play with my dog.
Some dogs may be dumped here to fend for themselves too. The ones without collars I wonder about and I think that a lot of people in this area, including myself like the fact that we can let our dogs loose to just run sometimes. They deserve to do that and not be holed up in a house all day.

Thanks RamblinRose for your comment on declawing cats. I've never had cats that were declawed but I know a lot of people that have because of destructiveness.
I thought it was like cutting fingernails or toenails.
As far as animal cruelty, I am totally against it as I am a lover of ALL animals but I will not break up a fight if I see one. Animals need to work things out as well as people do. Don't like it but that's life.

I still like the idea of the garden hose to break up a fight. That seems better to me than exposing oneself to injury, or having Darwinian survival of the fittest played out in your yard.
Declawing is more traumatic than cutting fingernails or toenails, since they are retractile and much more complex. It's more like having your fingers shortened at the first joint.
I think dogs should be confined in a (large enough) fenced yard and taken for walks (or runs), but I live in the city. Apparently things are much different in Timberon. As long as the dogs are friendly and don't kill every cat they see, I suppose it's okay. A different world. Big dogs certainly shouldn't be holed up in a house all day. Neither should they be chained up and left out in all kinds of weather, as a former neighbor treated her dogs. No wonder they barked constantly. She was a real piece of...work.
