Sigh...I'm actually really looking forward to that! I'm leaving in about 3 weeks...give or take anything unforeseen. I'm so tired of people everywhere and having a million options, but each one such a pain in the arse to get to or deal with once you're there. Tired of LINES!
For being a small town, Farmington has alot of amenities. My town doesn't have an indoor swimming complex, to name one! And I live in a swanky suburb! lol
Plus, I miss my hubby- home is where the heart is you know?

You know, I've read everything I could find about Farmington in the past several months knowing I was going to be moving there sight unseen...it's actually how I came to haunt this board lol.
I've read good things and bad things, some things that have irritated me, and some things that have excited me, and I've determined that really, like anywhere, it has it's ups and downs. But the positives are great since outdoorsy stuff is not small on my list of pros. Yes I've cruised the streets with google maps! lol
My hubby has also been out there several months now and he tells me some of his experiences, limited though they are since he's working so much. He has told me that he finds the people to be extremely nice. For an example, he was tinkering with something under the hood of the car, and he said practically as soon as he put the hood up he had more than one vehicle pull up to him and ask if he needed help. To me, that is truly remarkable. There's alot of places no one gives a rats hind-end if you're in trouble, they only care that you have the common decency to break down in the shoulder and out of their way.
So, I'm keeping an open mind, with perhaps a bit of audacity of hope to like the place.
**disclaimer** if in a few months I actually hate it, this post will self-destruct

It really does. It has THREE indoor pools that I know of (the Lions Pool, the Aquatic Center (50-meter, very nice) and one smaller one at the fitness center on Bloomfield highway.
The restaurants I tried weren't bad at all (it's been almost 2 years, so don't ask, LOL!!).
I get most of my stuff via internet, so shopping isn't an issue, really, but you even have options for that. There is a fair-sized Animas Valley Mall, most of the chains, 2 SuperWalmarts and a Sam's Club.
There are also two great skiing areas not far away that nearly always have reliable snow, unlike here in Southern NM.
There are downsides, too, so it's not all rosy, but no place ever is.
Of course you know we want the unvarnished truth when you finally arrive and come up for air, LOL!

Lots of outdoor stuff to do, if you're into that. The activities involving snow are basically all up northin in Durango. Farmington gets snow, but not much and it usually melts quickly. There is a new gym on 20th St, pretty much in the middle of town. Plenty of amenities, shopping, two Walmarts, Sams Club, Large Mall, public pools, parks. 3 hour drive to Albuquerque if you require big-city features, whatever that may be. House prices are still kind of high in Farmington (at least compared to here in Phoenix), but if you are looking at Durango, they are double those in Farmington at least. Commute from Durango depends on where in Durango you live. If you find something in Shenandoah or Rafter J, your commute would be a little shorter and much easier.

Yes I'm looking forward to swimming in winter! The big one looks cool with all the water slides and everything- I know my kiddies were impressed.
I'm glad you said the restaurants were good...I appreciate a good meal at a restaurant on occasion, and I read some sort of negative posts on chowhound about Farmington eats- well, not really negative, but just that there isn't much there. We'll see.
Internet shopping doesn't bother me either- neither does making a pilgrimage to Albuquerque or Santa Fe or Phoenix for that matter- but I have in-laws there, so kills two birds sort of thing.
I'm into the skiing- though I have mainly been doing nordic so I hope there's some of that.
Yes, I will definitely give my report once I'm there. Kindof looking forward to the trek out there too. Always love a good road trip!

Have a GREAT trip.....it's back on my list. Although Farmington can't touch the Tularosa basin as far as scenery and mountains-in-your-face type thing, the San Juans are neat, just a lot farther away than the Sacramentos are here.
The only thing that would make Alamogordo 100% perfect for me would be good snow at Cloudcroft and Ski Apache but I'm beginning to believe that it's going to be very seldom down here. I'm really disappointed as far as that goes, but really do love the area otherwise. We're just too far south.
I am not 100% sure, but I THINK that both Purgatory (Durango Mountain Resort) and Wolf Creek may have provisions for X-country skiing.

I thought to double check when I got home....yep, Purgatory does have it, and so does Wolf Creek...I'd bet that Telluride does, too. It's another area in the vicinity that is about 140 miles, a little bit farther than the other two.

LINK Wolf Creek
My heart is breaking. All that wonderful snow, and it's over 400 miles away.
