I am going to try 4' x 10', and with the square feet planting. I'm not sure how much time I will be spending on it, but I would bet a lot of time preparing, and then a little bit here and there for watering and maintenance.

Actually, if you can get it, the best by far is rabbit manure. It does not have to be aged. It can go straight from under the rabbit hutch to the garden. One of the few things I miss from our 17 yrs of having rabbits.

I plan to do a container garden this year as we are renting. My husband is able to get 5 gal buckets at work so will use those. My last garden in Maine was grown in these buckets. Only plan on growing maters, peppers, and some gourds.

Lisdol- you moving? I believe you about the rattlers. I know someone personally who lives out on Dingo whose dog was bitten by one last year.

Thanks Vinegaroon. I didn't think there were any edible xerics out there. I'd like to try to grow tomatoes, beans, corn, chilies, melons, potatoes, okra, onions and berries of some sort. If I can go with what I intended (hole-y livestock watering tubs) I should be able to grow everything in tubs and protect or water accordingly.

If I were going to guess, I can't see melons and okra, both of which like long spells really hot weather to mature!

Default What Should You Plant Tips

My Logic in doing a Garden is if you can get Potatoes or Onions or Tomatoes stuff that is not very expensive in New Mexico you are better off buying it at the Store fresh and it frees you to plant Vegetables that are hard to find or expensive at the store. I dont plant Corn anymore because of the Worms it attracts and i dont like to use pesticides. Although there is a Dusting for gardens that can be used as flea powder for dogs also. KID TIP.. sometimes it can be cheaper outside of your garden if you look around for stands that sell vegetables and Plants all over the place and saves you all that extra work. >>>>>>>> On Fertilizers Rabbits are fed hay and these seeds get into the Garden but it is very good fertilizer. Alfalfa has some pretty purple flowers when they bloom but the plant is hard to get rid of and it goes deep into the ground. el pintada kid

The amount of hay we fed to our rabbits was barely noticeable. Now, the horses on the other hand........

On the subject of potatoes, where can I find a bag larger than 5 lbs? I am used to buying 50 lb bag at a time and its expensive to have to buy 5 lb bags all the time. Russets seem to be very popular out here, but I want all purpose white potatoes.
Growing my own is out of the question at this time.

Good point....BUT....tomatoes? The ones in the supermarkets are pink garbage. The Farmer's Market here has them home-grown, but I am often not willing to get up that early on a Saturday to fight the crowds!! You have to be there around 7am......yep, I'm lazy!

I like higher-acid varieties or those with a perfect balance of sweet and acid. I can also control the acidity by amending the soil with an acidifier.

As for green chiles.....same thing. The growers usually don't sell my favorite variety, NuMex Joe Parker, so I'll have a few of those also.

Sure you are financially better off buying vegetables in a store. I don't garden to save money, although sometimes that happens.

I garden because it makes my life better. I don't have to wonder what chemicals went into my veggies. I can make a salad at the spur of the moment, and not have to go to the store, and it tastes so much better. I burn calories gardening, and I get a certain pride and satisfaction knowing I grew the vegetables myself. In short, a vegetable garden might be a wee bit more expensive than the sad specimens available at the market, but my health and happiness are greater when I do the gardening.
