I am wondering if they make noise. If you take the oil/gas wells in Eastern Oklahoma they make noise. The closest one to me is a couple miles and I can here their Ajax moters at night when I take the dog out. I loved and bought this place because of it being rural and no noise or lights but I am afraid the oil companies our ruining that for me. ANYWAY, I see the wind farms in Western Oklahoma and was wondering about noise level with them?. They seem to be spaced close. How close are they?
I know a contact and will get some answers to these questions. One thing to consider is the lack of scale in the photos: These things are BIG! Each blade is about 90 feet long to give you a frame of reference. A full grown adult can walk 3/4 down the inside of the blade (it is hollow) if it were lying on the ground. Also, the blades are literally an 'aircraft' wing designed to "stall" when very high winds are present. Modern wind turbines only operate within a certain range of windspeed to protect itself from self-destruction; therefore it won't spin too fast.
As for water conservation, you should see what percentage of water is lost every month to leaks and blow outs, here is some information from January 2002, where 77% of water in Timberon was lost before it could be billed and metered (page 12):

From what I was told 600,000 gallons were lost in a single blowout around Thanksgiving this year.
I'm not sure solar or wind power would be enough to power an appreciable amount of the community, but it could be used for certain utilities, such as lighting at the community center/roads/airstrip, or to assist pumping water from wells. Solar/wind wells could be installed to keep the fishing lakes full throughout the year.
Yep, there have been some water problems here and some people were without water for over a month.
The TWSD(Timberon Water Sanitation Dept.) has a board that is working very hard to get the problems fixed with the water situation. One of the holdups is waiting for the government and some other slacker type people that have to be dealt with but TWSD is trying anyway.
I saw a TV special about the geothermal systems in Iceland. An acquaintance of ours was from Iceland. What were you doing in Iceland?

My husband was assigned to the NATO base there. We loved it. Unfortunately, the country decided not to continue the contract and the base closed (I think they are using it for their small defense force). With the state their economy is in right now, I am kind of hoping they think re-opening it would be a good idea and send us back.
