Hey Stan, you can rent most houses month to month in Socorro. The nicer apartments in town (not that nice) wanted my sister to sign a 6-month lease. Here is a link to the local newspaper with the classifieds on the left hand side (that is where you would find a house to rent):

El Defensor Chieftain: Front Page

If you want something slightly more interesting or historic you can also rent an apartment at the Val Verde Hotel on Manzanares Street. One of my sister's rented a cool one bedroom overlooking the courtyard one summer which was beautiful because they have flowering trees covered in hummingbirds and a fountain in the Spring/Summer for $350 a month (don't be afraid to negotiate on rent - we did) and it included everything but phone. Last she stayed there you could rent the top floor penthouse (2-3 bdrm) for $600 a month. They also have a neat two floor apartment with a spiral staircase one of my buddy's rented for around $500 a month. The Val Verde would be right in town so you could walk to a cafe down the street, the P.O., grocery/Walmart. Probably would have to drive to the hospital unless you were up for a medium length uphill bike ride.

Otherwise I would go for a house in town. They are a hit and miss condition wise, you'll have to look around. You'll pay $600-$1000 for something nice and $350-$550 for something ok, and anything less than that will most likely be a trailer/mobile.

What is the best resource for finding available rentals in Socorro?

Summer rental needed for NMT student. My daughter prefers something close to the school. Room or partial home ok. She would like a rental that would allow a small rabbit. Please let me know if you have something available.

She is also interested in moving off-campus next year, so if you have rentals that will be available in the fall, please let me know.

Or, if there is a rental that is avail this summer and can continue through next year, that is also of interest.

k ive lived here 4 almost 10 years and u have lived here for 7, there is ALOT of crime in socorro, most goes under the radar not because the people that are doing it are good criminals or because the police department isn't good, but because none of the crime is on a big enough 'scale'. Most of which is related to drugs! i go to socorro high and i know who the big time drug dealers are. But, both of them were caught by with charges up to 40 yrs. in federal prison.
that dosent mean there isnt alot of drug dealers, but those were the only 2 that i knew that were big time to have the feds in town every once n awhile.
But there is stil alot of crime besides drugs, the 2nd most would be destruction of property, mostly broken windows and spray paint, etc.

Although, you will probably not see or hear of any of this because there is no real 'big' crimes in socorro. It is a very nice place to live, especially for retirement (lots of fun activities and nice scene), and a nice place to raise a family. There is alot of 'bad' kids at the high school, most from bad families, and are in gangs. but there is no bullying or fights or really any kind of bad behavior at school.
The gangs on socorro are not what you would expect. There is very min. violence, avg. 1 shooting and 4 fights (that actually make the paper) a year! the most pop. gangs are Sureno 13 and west side 18. BUT, at least a 1/4 of both gangs are somewhat 'friends' which is why there is no violence.

overall socorro is a very nice place, you will probably never see any violence, drugs, or really anything inless u really look for it!!

So there is a LOT of crime in Socorro, but overall it's a very nice place? Sounds contradictory to me, but I'll be willing to take my chances.
