100' tall ponderosa pines everywhere!!!
We named our cabin JD's Tree House because it is surrounded by pine trees and actually has a few growing through the decks. The cabin was built around the trees.
Worthless factiod. For everyone out there that are use to smell of eastern yellow pine, think Pine-Sol. Then the next time you're around a ponderosa pine stick your nose up to the trunk and smell a hint of vanilla instead.
As stated worthless info.

But interesting info.. Wonder how many of us will do just that?
The Pine or Vanilla smell is related to the trees unending war with insects. Trees cannot run so they practice a very effective form of chemical warfare.
For what it is worth coal tar is concentrated tree sap and a very dangerous chemical mixture.

I am envious of Ruidoso which somehow seems to get Ponderosa at 7,000 feet -- or am I mistaken about that? Up here in Santa Fe and Los Alamos they seem to need more altitude -- or perhaps more water.
I am at 6,000 feet and thus have a few dozen juniper and maybe a ten to a dozen pinon coming back from seed. Neither approach the height of a ponderosa. (The juniper growth rate is about 6 inches in a decade.) The upside is that they don't block the sun or the view and the Sangres are very visible.
here
I have planted two Austrian Pines which are supposed to do well around here and grow to 60 feet but it is not the same thing as being surrounded by 100 foot ponderosa.
