TiaDalma & nmnita: Not counting the results of a DNA test which shows the innocence of the incarcerated, I'm all for no more than one appeal. Thanks for the responses.

There's gotta be a Hollywood movie in that!

Yeah, life in prison without parole...there is more offered to murderers in prison than that is offered to people who have done nothing out on the street homeless

Actually here in NM, millions of dollars are spent on homeless shelters/emergency shelters/substance abuse programs, etc. Much of this money is federal, some is donations. I don't think you can compare the two populations, frankly.

Does Governor Richardson think everybody is REALLY STUPID inNew Mexico? The day he repealed the death penalty laws in our once fine state, he acted like he was really listening to the people. His mind was already made up. He stated that in the Albuquerque Journal. Yet, he had the balls to actually meet the parents of Deputy Mc Grane (sp?).who's son was killed by a man wanted for another murder.
It is a sad day for any law abiding citizens, and a glorious day for killers and those on the left who believe the penalties for murder should be eased.

This repeal of capital punishment will send a message to gang bangers that it is okay to move out to the warm weather climate, where life is cheap. Remember, Mexico has no capital punishment, the toughest gun laws found anywhere, and look what a SAFE NATION THAT HAS BECOME.
Thank you Governor Richardson, you are a liar and a traitor. You once appeared to be a modertate Democrat, but you are a Democrat in .transition, not knowing who to appeal to. I am sorry I voted for you, what a waste you turned out to be !

Perfact example: that is one case I was thinking about; the guy kills a cop, no real reason, is already wanted for murder and takes off for Mexico..At least he was caught and returned but will never be executed..Too, too, bad...

I will say, I thought all along your governor would sign the bill, blame this mess on him and the representatives that the people elected. Hopefully some will not be removed in 2010...

sandiaman: I don't think we are so easily categorized. I'm "on the left" in most ways, but I'm for the death penalty in some cases and also pro-gun! Labels...grrr.

Default Here's a very timely example

Just this morning here they had on the news: about a case (someplace in southern Missouri I think, not real familiar with alot of the state) the Neosho, Mo. (small town); in August of 2007 a guy went into a Sunday church service and shot 9 people. 3 died. (it was all over the national news when it happened).
Yesterday in his court hearing, he pled "Guilty to the murder" charges (I was shocked over the news of this). WHY? Why did he plead guilty instead of the trial going on, a verdict and then the years of appeals as is always "usual", etc.???

BECAUSE- they said, he did not want to have the chance of the "death penalty being his sentence". Period.

I thought this was one of the best examples for the Death penalty being kept on the books for murders.
Not only did he confess, but it was over bam- just like that.

(we've had several cases like this or end with a guilty plea, due to the Death possibility in the past few years, Yet I think it's been maybe 5 years that I remember hearing of the Death sentence being carried out here?)

IF the sentence laws were just for life in prison (with or without chance of parole), well, I doubt he would have said a peep.
And we'd be (taxpayers) paying for this trial and any appeals that follow, even without a death sentence (some still challenge the courts with no death penalty, just very long or life sentences)

I'd say in this case the Death penalty WORKED. Even if that was not the result.

This was a horrible case of murder, a slaughter of humans and in church.

Just thought I'd pass this timely case on, in this thread, some thing else to ponder, another aspect.

I sort of think part of the reasoning behind having a death sentence penalty was to use as a deterrent, in other words, if you kill someone, you yourself will also be killed. doesn't look like that the death sentence is not a very good deterrent after all? people still kill other people. might be best letting people know if they're going to murder someone, that they'll be incarcerated for the rest of their lives, with no possibility of parole, and make them manufacture something like they made criminals make license plates years ago. don't teach criminals anything. force them to work. maybe?
