Saw a quick note on my SASS forum that all Sportsmen's Warehouses' are closing except a few by the Canadian border?
Canadian outfit backed out of the deal....
What a blow to the sportsment, and the folks that work for them..
They only cut 23 stores, including the one here in Cruces. The Albuquerque store is saved. The store here was making good money too, selling ammo as soon as it was stocked and plenty of "assault rifles". I think it has to do more with a company wide restructuring than store performance, at least in some respect.
Until Walmart opened it's new store here in T or C recently, we had no place to browse/purchase sporting goods. If people wanted tents, sleeping bags, fishin' poles and so forth, we were having to drive to las cruces to buy. after we arrived in T or C in November of 2005, I immediately recognized the need for a sporting goods store here. now with the new wallyworld, we now have about 1/2 a sporting goods store. people cannot buy rifles/pistols, but they seem to stock ammunition for these weapons. It appears like they have a sort of well stocked fishing equipment section, and they also handle some items for boaters too.
I don't like to see any business go belly up, but these hard economic times test even the best established businesses.
The article said in the Cruces Sun News that if there was one less store closed, the Cruces location would have survived. A real shame. I loved going in there shopping for fishing lures. I still have a couple of gift cards that I have to cash out now!
I hope this makes the Albuquerque store stronger. The shelves have been pretty barren the past several months.
sometimes large retailers deliberately allow their shelves to run dry leading up to the new year, because lowering their inventory helps them at tax time? my spouse works for a local retailer, and after the christmas holiday, the store looked like a virtual ghost store with barren shelves. just a theory.

I asked the manager and he claimed it was due to the pending sale of the store. Hopefully the new owners will stock it up.
