Santa Rosa?
Before I get mauled *smiles* for asking without searchin'.... I did and about all I found was that PK really likes Santa Rosa and finds it beautiful and that it's near some bodies of water.
Anyone else wanna weigh in? I can't say too much, other than Greg's been offered a job (based on his phone interview AND they'll hold it until we get there in 4-5 weeks!) in Santa Rosa.
What do ya'll know about the area? Commutable (is that a word?) from the East Mountains?
Eek. This is so sudden, and from such an unexpected source!

Well, I personally like Santa Rosa; it's a neat LITTLE town, but I would not want to live there. I assume that the "East Mountains" means Tijeras/Edgewood/Moriarty.....so you're looking at a straight shot on I-40, with a distance of almost 80 to100 miles, depending on the town.
I would find the commute VERY tiring, because there is a LOT of truck traffic on I-40, and I found it much worse than I-10 and I-20 in Texas. I have driven the I-40 from Santa Rosa to ABQ many times, and I wouldn't like it myself on a daily basis.
But....there are trade-offs, so I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

I found it to be a pretty little town, but it's quite isolated. Might as well live in Fort Davis (TX). I agree that I-40 can be a drag.

I like Ft Davis better than Santa Rosa, and they are about the same size. I'm really looking forward to my trip down there. I haven't been in over 10 years, and I miss good Tex-Mex food.

A Cathy said, it's 80-100 miles to the "East Mountains", but that only gets you to the east mountains, which isn't really anywhere either. From there it's another 30-45 minutes to Albuquerque (shopping, entertainment, etc.). Santa Rosa is a nice small town, but it's a good ways from any more populated area.

Dang it, I just don't know what to do. We want to live in Edgewood/Moriarty, but the job is in Santa Rosa. Not very commuter friendly distance, I suppose. We don't want to live in SR- if we're more centrally located to Abq, if the job doesn't work out long term, the chance of finding another position is going to be a bit easier.
Think i'll start another thread regarding the situation, not just SR.
Thanks guys.

I wouldn't call it commuter friendly. Day trip friendly for sure. Good luck.

I agree. The dearth of Tex-Mex food would be a major loss in a move to NM, IMO. Although I do like the New Mexican alternatives.

A good friend taught there for a number of years, two of his kids graduated from there. It is a nice little town with a lot of the small town isolation you come to expect. I don't think I would want to live there, but I liked visiting people who are part of the community. The swimming hole (Blue Hole?????) is nice, and for NM is certainly different.
Depending on the kind of work I was doing and the size of the family I had, I think I would put my family in the east mountains around Tijeras or Edgewood somewhere, get a nice travel trailer, and spend the work week in SR and the weekends (or anytime I got stir crazy) in the Mountains.
