Job decisions...
Ack. Greg's been offered a job- his choice of three, to be exact.
Great benefits, set his own hours- more or less, more money than he's making here....he can take a senior supervisory position in Milan or Santa Rosa or a secondary supervisory in Alb.
We want to live in the east Mountains area. Or, a bit broader, we want to live in a horse friendly, family friendly COMMUNITY, not just a place where people live. After touring the EM area, I subscribed to the Telegraph and really liked how homey the paper portrayed the area. Hadn't really considered anywhere else.
What to do?
Take the higher ranking job with a bit more pay, but farther away from where we want to be (Milan or Santa Rosa) or the closer, slightly less pay without much room for advancement position?
Sure wish I had a crystal ball.
What would you do, in this position?
Taking into consideration my blasted health problems, the upcoming summer (pre-spring has already, quite frankly, been hell on earth for me ) weather.....consider this a ticket to get outta Dodge and where i'll be healthier and semi-normal and make the best of where we land?
I just don't know.

I think you answered it yourself on the other thread
" if we're more centrally located to Abq, if the job doesn't work out long term, the chance of finding another position is going to be a bit easier."
Go to where your heart leads you.. But do consider the job also.
Not much help for you, but its YOUR decision.
How soon does he have to let them know - then start?

You know, something similar happened to us. We lived in New Hampshire, but wanted to get back to New Mexico. We were thinking Albuquerque or Las Cruces, but on one single morning three things happened:
1. We got a good purchase offer on our house
2. An inheritance check was delivered that made it possible for me to retire
3. My husband got a job offer, not for where we had planned, but for Clovis
We went for it, thinking we could always move from Clovis when he retired in a few years. After two years here (surprise!) we're thinking that maybe we'll stay right here...
And, no matter what happens, we've loved being in New Mexico. It just seemed likes the fates were conspiring.

I like Milan more. You have a little more shopping in the Grants area plus your much closer to Albuquerque than you would be if you were in Santa Rosa. Probably better Medical care in the Grants area as well. They also have a NMSU branch there if one wanted to take a class or two.

Thanks, Jane. He was offered the job yesterday and asked for a few days, the man offered to hold the job for him. The ABQ job was an option that wasn't really heavily explored, as the upper position is already filled. My thoughts were, and if it were MY decision alone:
Take the ABQ job (obviously, should the higher ranking job become available, it'd go to Greg immediately) with the possibilty for advancement only if the higher ABQ job were opened OR that a transfer to the Moriarty (yeah, there's one located in Moriarty) location would be offered should it become available. This *is* retail management, of a sort and I know the turnover seems to be higher in retail management than other management fields. So maybe *the* position opens up in a few months, maybe he's in a holding pattern at the lower position for a while longer? I don't know.
My heart wants to go to EM, or perhaps Los Lunas, but asking Greg to drive an hour each way doesn't seem right. Too bad there's nothing around Cline's Corners. That'd solve a lot.
Thanks, clairz. We sorta had the same fate-related thing. Or that's my interpretation of things.
1. As we get warmer and warmer here, my health is failing faster and faster. None of my specialists can do anything but throw more bandaids on a spurting artery (not literally :-) and they're good docs- there's just nothing that modern medicine can offer than helps.).
2. We've been able to sell/place our critters/things that we don't want to take in the past month or so. For dang near close to asking price.
3. Greg's former employer gave him a pretty danged generous 'thanks for your hard work for the past nine years' financial gift. Enough to cover a basic relocation, especially with the monies from the sold stuff.
4. This job offer, after tons of resumes, applications and research. The very nature of the job, with it's flexibility. Oh, and it's only a five day week, not six like he's had for the past 20 years or so.
(editing myself here, Greg just talked to his former employer, a man whose opinion he highly respects. He reminded Greg that he's driven that distance for a job for years (until the past three years, actually), so it wouldn't be anything new. And the possibility always exists that a Abq/Moriarty position would open eventually. This may sound like a like a reach, I know, but Greg was with his former company from inception to the time the owner retired, so planning for the far future isn't out of range.
Thanks, Yb. It seems that people either love the Grants area or hate it. I'm not sure how much the crime/prison factors in, or the proximity to the reservations.

I suggest your health should be the deciding factor. Even in pollution free NM Santa Rosa has to have cleaner & dryer air than ABU or the East Mountain area. Besides anyone that can earn a parting gift and a glowing recommendation (glowing as in praise not one on fire) from a former employee can probably do it again.
Good luck and good hunting.

I have lived in the ABQ area 10 years, my wife and I do not have major medical problems (I am 60). New Mexico has some severe medical personnel shortages. You can get treatment, but it may take time or many long commutes the further you live from ABQ. I meet a lot of people who have comuted long distances for what might be considered routine visits. Having lived in over 10 states, I consider NM the most inconvienient when it comes to medical services. I am sure others have different experiences. But each time I consider move to more rural areas I consider medical. (I have lived in rural areas also). New Mexico is a large sparse state.

I agree with the others. You know what you want to do.
Maybe give it a few days and see if anything comes to you instead of making a quick decision but either way you'll be in NM which is better for your health than humid Tenn.

The Grants-Milan area is farm friendly. There are plenty of farms around that area. Plus you will be between Gallup and Albuquerque. Both have plenty of shopping options. Also in Grants you will be surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Well, if you do consider the SR job, maybe consider some in-between property near Clines Corners? It would shorten the commute for Greg. I know someone who lives Southeast of Moriarty (I don't know where, but google mapping makes it look like the middle of nowhere) and she comes into the E Mtn area for things often. I know the Moriarty Edgewood school district runs way out towards Clines Corners. I think the MESD website has a district boundary map.
Perhaps if you got a mobile home that was not permanently mounted and put it on land out there, if your dh got a job in Moriarty or ABQ, you could hire someone to pull it to the Edgewood area and put it down on some land.
Just a thought.
I would lean towards the job in ABQ as long as the pay was good enough to support your family's needs, but wanted to give you something to chew on.
