Trust me, you can do it if you take your dogs to training, and then let the trainer teach the human how to train their dogs.
Larger Collie on the left is a male and about 10 years old. He was crazy initially, basic obedience school twice and more training. He was on TV a few years ago for saving a ladies life. Steve Stucker of channel 4 had a short piece on Mr Tucker.
The one on the right is a female tri-color collie, A breeder gave her up when she was 18 months old, put her in the ABQ pound. I took for a few days till we could find someone who would take her in, it ended up being me.

No more gas chambers in NM
"New Mexico is becoming the 18th state in the nation to prohibit the euthanizing of animals in gas chambers.
Gov. Bill Richardson signed legislation into law on Monday that bans carbon monoxide gas chambers for killing dogs and cats at animal shelters.
“There is a more humane way to euthanize pets and we have to enforce this,” Richardson said at a news conference at an animal shelter on the outskirts of Santa Fe.
Only four communities — Clovis, Jal, Lovington and Tucumcari — use gas chambers. Others across the state use lethal injection, which Richardson described as the “least stressful and most humane way” of euthanasia."
You can read the rest of the news article (and yes, they spelled "governor" wrong) at Govenor signs bill banning gas chambers for euthanizing animal | gas, animal, govenor - News - Clovis News Journal.

I'm glad you're happy with your local shelter.
I know of a couple of people in our neck of the sands who have adopted dogs from our local shelter, and were supposed to be certified adoptable, but were later found to have a series of health related issues.
We adopted a golden retriever years ago in winsconsin, and when we talked to them (animal shelter) on the phone about her, they claimed she was only about 2 years old. Well, when we took her to our vet for a checkup, the examining vet after looking at her teeth, said she was really about 7 years old. We really didn't care, becuase we were told in another day she would have been put down. So, we saved her from the needle, and were happy with her nonetheless. She adapted very well. Sandy was a sweetheart.

I just wanted to show off a picture of them both and to say the humane society in Ruidoso rocks as far as how they take care of animals.

The sad part of most shelters...they only know what they've been told about the dog or what they have guessed.
95% of the dogs we've had over the years came from shelters. Only two came from breeders.
This is my sweetie I got at WMR.

Alison - what a sweetie....
Mutz - Good point. I never thought that a shelter would give the incorrect age of the dog or any incorrect info.
The 2 we have have a little history to them.
Whiskey (yellow lab mix) was owner surrendered because they lived on a farm that had goats.
Whiskey would chase the goats and the people didn't care for that so they surrendered him.
Dog = chasing animals, cars, etc. Didn't they know this could happen when they got him?
Jasper was surrendered because his previous owner is military and had to go overseas.
He's obviously had no training whatsoever so I need to go back and watch dog whisperer episodes. He's like a rowdy kid and at this point, we're teaching him the sit and off commands.

She is, Rich. Which surprised us as we got her at 10 months of age. None of the bad puppy stuff came with her.
I can only fault her for one thing...digging. But dogs will be dogs and its more of an annoyance than anything.
She is quiet, loves kids, love to go on walks and rides, ect.
We took advantage of the training they offer when you adopt a pet and she did wonderful. She has a bit of a stubborn streak, but once she learned she is not alpha dog, she was fine.
Her favorite pasttime is terrorizing my two cats.

Alison or anyone -
Do you have any ideas on being the Alpha?
Jasper and Whiskey are strong personalities and Jasper is very strong personality.
I try to be alpha but it hasn't worked yet on him.
