Our realtor at the time told us she had just sold a brand new house and the couple were moving in and after having been unpacking all day they sat down in the living room to rest, the husband was sitting on the floor up against a wall and all of the sudden there was a flood of water coming down from the ceiling. Turns out the plumber forgot to properl connect a pipe and it finally gave away. I remember thinking how in the world did the inspector miss that? Thankfully the house was brand-new and under warranty. We have several friends who built their own homes because the builders here weren't up to their standards. I know it is not only in NM but probably everywhere but since this is where I live this is what I am familiar with. And it doesn't exclude the same thing from happening in Texas I know but you just didn't hear those stories where I am from.

Yes It's happening many places. That's why when people move to Texas, they are amazed at how much house can be purchased and the condition they are in. I am sure the newer ones are not as good as the ones built in the 70s but they are better than those elsewhere. Well, let me get off of this NM thread talking about TX. See y'all

Problem with all of that is, even with the inexpensive housing, you are still in Texsucks.

Nope. That would be like hating mold. I know some people live with mold, and some may even enjoy it. I just don't want to spend much time with mold, because it is unpleasant.

NM taxes overall are very low IMO. Even the property taxes may now stay low, if the legislation for "lightning tax" repeal goes through.
Also, people often think that if a state has no personal income tax it's a good deal. Far from it. Wyo has none, but is in the top 10 in terms of overall tax load. Texas may have no income tax, but you get slammed with the combination of property tax, property insurance and electricity rates.
New Mexico is a virtual tax haven compared to many other states.

About 6 years ago the Washington Post did an article comparing Tax costs between
the general DC/ Virginia and Maryland suburban area and Florida. I no longer
remember the details, but by the time you factored in all the local taxes and
various governmental fees, the net result was that anywhere in the DC area
was only very slightly more expensive than most major population areas of
Florida.
FWIW, I consider the tax & fee costs of living in Albuquerque to be far less
that Northern Virginia. I guess it all comes down to "where are you coming from?"

I think it means that Vinagaroon doesn't have anything against Texans, but he wouldn't let his daughter marry one.
