Crackerjack, do you know anything about the Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House? We are going to Silver City in about a week and heard that it is a good place to eat. This will be a short trip just to get a feel for Silver City. We won't have enough time to really ask questions but it will give us an idea if the area appeals to us. We picked it because of your posts. We have appreciated the information that you have provided.

Hey AZ,

I have always had luck at the Jalisco Cafe and Caballeros Restaurant.

Buckhorn is overpriced for their quality of steaks. In my experiance I have asked for medium well and I have recieved my steak charcoal crispy.

The red barn and the drifter were very unclean when I tried them. The waitress at the red barn even mentioned something about the cockroach problem they have.

Default DON'T Move to Silver City!!

Here is my take on Silver City:

It is very dirty....not just the streets, as far as litter goes, but most buildings, businesses, houses, etc., are also. Everything here is rundown. Poverty is everywhere and it is depressing.

Also, missing, and yes, this is the desert, so what should I expect....is grass. Green in general. No one takes the time or money to make sure that businesses look inviting, homes look warm and friendly.

Everyone is on top of each other. The outskirts are worse. There is mud, decay and filth everywhere except a few streets downtown.

Health care is awful. I have tried in vain to find a good, local doctor as I have several health issues myself.

Many people have to go to Las Cruces, or El Paso, just to find a halfway decent doctor.

NM is listed as the 49th most desirable place to live, and the 41st healthiest state.

I came here to visit a friend, whose family drug and violence habbits appalled me. Drugs are everywhere. Certain hangouts are noted as "crackhead" hangouts.

Between Deming and Albuquerque is known as "Overdose Valley" because there are more Cocaine related deaths than in any other place in the United States.

Need I say more????

NM in general is beautiful. But, I came from a very safe town with good healthcare and low use of drugs.

I am literally STUCK here, waiting until I have enough money to go back to New York.

I hope you decide not to move to Silver City....it is so depressing!

Azloafer, Buckhorn, I think is a pretty good place, but that is me and yes Jalisco Cafe and Caballeros are good too. I hate that Faerieosity is very unhappy with Silver City, but I think it is a nice "old west" type of town. It won't be a city back east, but that is what Silver City is all about, the wild character of the town. Different strokes for different folks, you just have to visit and see if is what you like or not. I like the town myself.

Question Interesting...

Faerieosity,
I have never been to Silver City. But you make a couple of comments that catch my attention...

Can you please cite your source? Or maybe a website? I would be interested in seeing the lists you reference.

I've lived in NM for over 30 years, but I have never heard of this epithet nor the statistic you list. Any chance you (or perhaps someone else) can cite a source for these as well? I do not necessary refute your claims. I'm just surprised I've never heard them before.

Chap

I think some people back east, like this person said was from New York, move out to NM and want what they left behind. New Mexico is a desert area, by and large, so they aren't going to see green lawns and there is dirt and sand. It is a desert afterall. New Mexico isn't for dainty people who like dainty things. It is the west and it is still in some ways, the wild west. That is what I like about New Mexico. It is rugged. No it isn't a cosmopolitan, high society state. New Mexico is genuine. I know Silver City has artists, galleries, retirees and a lot of nice people. They don't look on drugs to me. I am sure there are some, like in any area in the USA. No, New Mexico isn't for everyone, but for those who fit New Mexico, it is one nice place to live.

I hope you find your way back home soon Faerieosity. I have never heard those stats you threw out either. May I ask why you are STUCK here?

Sounds like a nice place do you mind if I ask the name of the town?

Default Silver City

I lived in Silver for 5 years and I LOVED it!!! I had to learn to deal with a lot of new mexico stuff because I am a born and raised Northern Californian.

Down side...The lawns (if any) are green in winter not summer.
I had to learn to cook all over again
It took me six months to walk without gasping for breath at 6200 feet elevation.
I quickly learned not to put on clothes with out shaking them out first..bugs everywhere...
Very few birds except vultures, roadrunners, and birds of prey. Although you do get birds coming up from Mexico for a short visit.
Native american stuff everywhere...very touristy.
Mexican men would not deal with me..wanted the man of the house.
Stopping and talking in the isles is a must. If you rush on by you will have offended them.
You have to wrap your pipes in winter and I had to crack the ice for my rabbits and horses to drink. 16-20 degrees was very common for winter lows.
The wind blows constantly...it can be very irritating!
But I was colder in California because of the moisture in the air.
Your vehicle may not run well up there until you adjust it.
Muddy slippery clay every where...lots of rutted roads.
It does snow!
Getting good wells drilled can be a problem.
Hail can be huge!!!
Floods and slides are imminent.
Terminology is fun to try to grasp!! yeah right!
The elk can and do rip up your fences and make you wait for 30 mins. while they cross the highway because they go single file.
Free range cattle means BIG BIG gaurds on your vehicles if you want to feel really safe.
Everyone drives really slow and sometimes if I am driving a truck the other truck coming at me will slow down and stop and you all have to shoot the breeze for awhile. ( I love it) Goes something like this...Mornin! Mornin! Where ya headed?...Down to Duncan to pick up some rabbits...yea, yea, Had my share of rabbits in my day....well,...... have a good one.......yea you too...and you drive off.
Centipeds that are over a foot long and they actually had contests in Silver.
White kangaroo thingys all over the roads at certain times of the years...and don't forget the tarantulas, I had to drive over them one day..They all came out at once and it looked like the road was moving....
Allergies are worse here than anywhere else I have been. Pinions and sagebrush etc. are horrible.
Shopping is best in one of the big cities. Go once a month and bring everything back to the freezer.

On the good side, Never have I seen more beautiful stars, sunrises or sunsets.
The air is clean.
Thunder can make you think God is coming!!! Lightening is wide wide bolts like in the comic books.
People are mostly friendly.
I found the best dog I have ever owned in the Silver City pound. and he traveled with me everywhere and finally went to doggie heaven at age 14.
Jaliscos...BEST place.
Hester house if it is still there great for fudge.
The college has a great library. 4-H, endurance horse riding, animals breeding/raising etc are well accepted.
Lots of old cowboys and miners..
Rough and tumble and throw in the native americans and the mexicans and you have a pretty good mix of people. I think the mexicans out number the caucasians now.
Tons of outdoors stuff to do. and lapidary stuff.
Everything is in large spanish words first then the english is smaller. Hard to get a job if you are not fluent in spanish.
If you have health issues don't move to Silver..unless they are not that bad. The drive to Albuequerque, Las Cruces or Paso or Tuscon is a very long one.
I would move back in a hot second, but then again I do not dirt, bugs, rough and tumble and not being able to have DSL or cable etc.

Actually he or she had it backwards under the most liveable category NM was ranked 41 and under the healthiest category NM ranked 49. Type in 2006 most liveable states, and 2006 healthiest states into google and you will get to the web address, I’m sure if I put it in this message it would get cut.

As for me I want to move to NM in a couple of years when I retire. Maybe those rankings are a blessing NM for the most part is one of the few unspoiled environments left. I’d hate to see it become like So Cal, Las Vegas or Phoenix. Maybe I won’t like it, but I really think I will, I’ve enjoyed NM the few times I’ve been able to get down there, the food is primo too!

Regards RB
