Alisha - this is not a chat room. Your questions could take hours or days to get answered, and none of us, as far as I know, are public health professionals tasked to give out information over the internet. I suggest you follow ajzjsmom's suggestion and look at the CDC.gov website and maybe the NM Dept of Health website as well.
Overall, this swine flu doesn't seem to be so virulent, esp. compared to SARS a few years back. And as tecpatl stated, common flu caused far more problems/deaths in the US last year. The main effects this time around will be economic, although not near what the economic effects would've been had we panicked and closed the border.
Swine flu will probably disappear back into its natural reservoirs for some time, mutate a bit, and re-emerge in a few years. Maybe the new & improved swine flu will be super-virulent, maybe not.
Now if anyone really wants to get worried, read The Hot Zone. Marburg, ebola, etc. That's the real McCoy.
I have a friend who is a nurse here and I asked her about it this morning and she said she thought it was already here and had been for awhile but since the normally don't test they just say "oh you have flu symptoms" and give you the antivirals noone really knows. I also have another friend who thinks her assistant had it in March.
And Tim Rankin I agree about the economic effects had we closed the border, since millions if not billions of dollars of commerce cross the border everyday.
ajzjmsmom: 15,000 commecial trucks cross the border every day, at Texas ports of entry alone. Then add in NM, AZ, and California. The damage to our economy would be catastrophic....far greater than the flu.

This what my hubby said last night, he is in upper management in the Border Patrol so is privy to alot of things others are not hearing and he was saying there was no way they would shut the border down for the exact same reason you said.
How sad. If he does test positive, and it is true he was healthy yesterday and got sick and died today, that is going to cause some panic. We got the letter from the state dept of health sent home today in the folders, and they indicated they will close schools if swine flu continues to spread and they deem the closings necessary.
Did you see the news today? They said the little boy did not die from the flu.
Poor kid. I am glad for public safety concerns it was not the flu, but still sad for him and his family.
