Rio Rancho - Sixth Annual Mayor’s Picnic Sunday is Funday

Preparations are underway for the sixth annual Mayor’s Picnic Sunday is Funday, which will take place on Sunday, August 21, 2011, from noon to 4 p.m. at Loma Colorado Park, 555 Loma Colorado Blvd. The theme for this year’s event is “Carnival” and it will be reflected in event games and booths.

At this family style picnic, you’ll find musical entertainment, activities for kids, vendor booths, and inexpensive food items such at $.50 hot dogs. Parking will be available at the park, and the adjacent Rio Rancho High School and Loma Colorado Main Library for $2.

Mayor Tom Swisstack is once again challenging the community - businesses, nonprofits, kids and seniors - to a fun pentathlon challenge consisting of athletic, relay-style events where teams will compete against one another. In addition, Car Shows Unlimited will present approximately 100 pre-1980 cars and trucks, a silent auction for family-related items will take place, and the mayor has agreed to be the target for some cream pie throwing.

To register to participate in the car show or for more information, please call (505) 220-5150 or (505) 994-4416.

Individual and business sponsors are needed to continue to make this event possible and successful. Those interested in being a booth vendor to market or sell family or youth-oriented products, or to be a sponsor of this event, should contact the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club (Dave Heil) at (505) 228-7189 or daveheil16@msn.com; Tony Popper at (505) 892-0325 or tpopper@qwest.net (http://www.ci.rio-rancho.nm.us/index.aspx?nid=940 - broken link); or visit http://www.rioranchokiwanis.com.

Sunday is Funday is sponsored and coordinated by the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club, the city of Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, and other community organizations.

Any resulting proceeds, after paying event expenses, will benefit youth programs in Rio Rancho such as scholarships for parks and recreation programs, the Rio Rancho Boys and Girls Club, the Sandoval County Juvenile Justice Program, and the Elks Lodge Boy Scouts.

Come and join the fun and have a great time participating in this Rio Rancho family event, which attracted more than 4,000 people last year.
