It depends on your housing budget and if you have elementary school age children as to where you would want to live. Houses on the east of Scenic from 10th St thru Indian Wells are nice and feed into good schools. Alot of people want to live at the golf course and while the houses are nice alot of them have evaporative cooling and they also feed into an elementary that is very overcrowded. Then there are the Wood Streets at the north end of town, depending on what your budget is they have a wide variety of houses and there are a few for rent. It feeds into a pretty good elementary their numbers are just high. However if you have no children then it is all kinda moot point. As for the areas to keep away from I agree with chilegal's advice.

Then I would say other than keeping away the areas previously mentioned it will all be a matter of choice and what you are looking for rental wise. Welcome to Alamogordo, it is not as bad as I make it out to be.

My dad and his wife moved to Alamogordo last summer, so far they love it. He's retired Navy and he compliments the doctors at the AFB nearby. He never has to wait and seeing a specialist is no hassles, at all. They really enjoy the low cost of living there and the hiking and sight-seeing of all the mountains. He said there are lots of retired military in town, so he has a good time meeting other people. Good Luck in your search!

If you're used to Tucson, Alamo's heat won't be anything to you, LOL!!
I gripe about the hot weather here, and it's not like it's hotter than from whence I came--West Texas!
It's more the fact that there is so often no compensating snow and very cold weather at Ski Apache/Ruidoso/Cloudcroft. The year I checked temps and weather, Ski Apache and Ski Cloudcroft (which actually opened that year) had their best seasons in years.
As soon as I moved here, the snow went away and it got hot. I left Midland,Texas in Aug 2007, 90 degrees.
I arrive in Alamogordo the same afternoon, 5 hours later...to 102.
I must have jinxed it good.
HOWEVER.....it is now 87 degrees in Alamo...and 99 degrees in Midland, which is usually always hotter.

It was "only" 94 degrees in Fort Worth today, but I'll wager than the heat index was higher than yours. The humidity makes more difference to me than the temperature. It also keeps the temperature from going down much at night. Here at one a.m., it's still 81 F. In August, the low temperature is sometimes higher than that.

Oh, I'm sure that it was......the humidity does make all of the difference.
87/65 for us yesterday.
99/70 for Midland.
Midland, in recent years, has had nights that don't go below 80, and it's more humid than it once was, though still nothing compared to yours in DFW and most of the rest of Texas. While I prefer it below 80 at all times, I don't mind below 90 for the summer.
As for the 80 we had in January, no. So unseasonable.

It was 73/94 at DFW Airport yesterday. At my house, it was 78 degrees at 5 AM. Yuck! And it's going to be in the upper 90s this weekend. I don't much like summer in North Central TX any more. Of course, I'd much rather be here in Ft Worth than in Houston. But NM and its low humifdity sounds much better than either.
