Question about Lordsburg New Mexico and surrounding Area
Hi everyone. I will be moving to NM soon. Reason, Border Patrol. My duty station is in Lordsburg. I'm from Puerto Rico and I've never been anywhere close to NM. From what I have read in other threads Lordsburg is almost a "ghost town". So, my question is where is the best place to look for housing? I'm looking for a central location between Lordsburg and El Paso or any other city. I don't mind to commute. My real concern is my wife, I'm looking for a peaceful place to live. I will be working a lot in my first years as Border Patrol Agent so I want peace of mind and to know my wife will be alright while I am out. Like I said I'm from Puerto Rico so the Spanish is not a problem either. I would really apreciate any comments on this matter. Thanks for your time!

Deming, NM would probably be a good choice.

Try using Google Street View for Lordsburg.
lordsburg, nm - Google Maps
Lordsburg is peaceful, but has about only 2500 people (and shrinking). I am not sure what threshold your wife and you would be comfortable living in when it comes to amenities. For instance, the nearest Wal-Mart Supercenter is in Deming, about 60 miles east. Deming has about 15,000 people, or 5 times the size of Lordsburg. However, the amount of crime in that area, relative to the population, seems to be rather high.

About as close as Deming is Silver City. Night-and-day differences between the two places.
Recommend you try living in Lordsburg at first, as for a town its size it has far more to offer than most (interstate hwy helps with that).

Baezrogelio, while your not the military still i'm wishing you the ''best of success'' in defending our southern border from drugs, human smuggling, etc.. as the Border Patrol is as important as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Military for protecting our country.

Ditto from Double H. Welcome to NM!
As far as I know Lordsburg is just your basic old railroad town. There just isn't a lot going on, but I've gone through the area several times, spent the night there several times, and encountered friendly people. The above posters are right, Deming is where you would shop, it's an hour away east on I-10. Going west, Wilcox, Az., is a little further. One thing about the SW portion of New Mexico, the wind can REALLY howl there in the winter. Hopefully other posters can help you here.

Welcome to NM and welcome to the Border Patrol. Have you just finished the academy? My husband has been in the Border Patrol for 21 yrs and 2 stations ago we were in Lordsburg. We chose to live in Silver City, it is a very quite town and does have a super Walmart. I however would recommend that if you can find housing in Lordsburg you do, had we stayed at the Lordsburg station we would have moved there, the commute isn't to bad from Lordsburg to Silver City, however it does get old after awhile. The station was very short staffed when we were there and my hubby was the APAIC so he worked alot of hours and when you add the commute he was away from home alot. Silver City weather wise is cooler than Lordsburg as it is at a higher elevation. If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them, good luck to you and you will probably love the work in Lordsburg, they keep pretty busy there.

Actually not trying to step on any toes Silver City actually has the closest S Walmart, while the speed limit is faster between Lordsburg and Deming because of I-10, Silver City is closer. For any shopping other than Walmart, you go to either Las Cruces or you can go to Tucson. Lordsburg seems to be the halfway mark between El Paso and Tucson, when we looked at the inlaws flying in they were about the same distance.

Thanks. I haven't started the Academy yet I just got the call yesterday with the instructions to where to report and when, but since I don't know nothing about NM I'm starting early to seek info about Lordsburg and surroundings. About the weather, can you give me a glimpse about it? What can you tell me about Siver City? Is there a lot to do there? Is there a lot of difference between the weather of Lordsburg and Silver? About amenities in Silver, medical facilities, schools, college? Is the cost of living high in Silver City? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
