Plus only an hour from Cruces and 2 from Albq., near 2 lakes and the Rio Grande River (to be near water in NM is great) and 10 bath houses with hot mineral water from the huge underground springs. I suggest you check out the Herald newspaper which they post online a week or two after publication. It has real estate classifieds and there seem to be plenty of places near here (Caballo, Cuchillo, Elephant Butte) with 10 acres. I'll tell you Hillsboro is priced higher than most other areas of Sierra County for some reason. There ARE drugs here; there are drugs EVERYWHERE, but it's never affected our lives in any way. I couldn't even tell you a neighborhood that's considered a druggie neighborhood, and if you're living on 10 acres, can't imagine why those people would affect you. There's also a growing recycle/green/sustainable/off the grid movement going on here. Not saying anything wrong with SC or Ruidoso, but both were too pricey for me and too much winter in Ruidoso. And I LOVE all the water here! We floated down the Rio Grande 4 days ago for the first time this season; lovely, fun...

Hey there,
Hillsboro is where Berrenda ranch is ( Berrenda Creek Ranch | Heritage Preserve) - this is one place we are looking at. What is the area around there? Does it turn green or is it mostly rocks?
Thanks,

I like the Capitan and Ruidoso area for the many events you can attend. You can be as isolated as you want, left alone but have activities to participate in if desired.

You might want to check out the towns east of I-25 between Raton and Las Vegas. do a city-data check on Roy and the Folsum, Capulin and Des Moines triangle. citi-data indicated these are nearly ghost towns and Street view confirms the statistics. There are the towns west of I-25 as well.
Guess where my next recon trip will be going?

I've been through Capulin, Folsom and Des Moines (as well as Grenville), and it's a very attractive area physically. Those towns are almost invisible. I don't know how practical it would be to live there.

Alrighty... in that case I'd recommend the higher elevation parts (5000-7500ft) of southern NM... you'll find the mildest year-round temps there. And if being within 1hr of a Walmart and dirt roads are sufficient for you, then there are a lot of possibilities. You should be able to buy a good sized spread for $100k.
North of Ruidoso and Capitan... Arabela even would be places to look. Arabela is certainly away from the rat race and is next to beautiful mountains, yet you can get to Roswell or Ruidoso in less than an hour. Definitely check out the area south of Cloudcroft (Timberon, etc). Also the Mimbres valley area NE of Silver City.

Is Deer Canyon still part of your options?

Not really - too expensive. It is beautiful there though - I just wish I could afford it.

Like the other person said try Ruidoso. And also try Cloudcroft. It's a bit higher up, summers are very nice but don't know much about winter. It's away from big cities with a country town feel.
Also look at Alamagordo (sp?)

Heard about Cloudcroft. I also followed some threads in the forum on Alamagordo and my impression was that the place is less than nice. Maybe I misread....
