I think we need to spend more on the military now that the #2 country (China) is spending over 1/10th what we do. Try to keep that 10 to 1 ratio...

Allow me to re-phrase that post:

Percent of world military expenditures:

More than 50% -- United States
Less than the United States -- everyone else combined

Number of countries in the world -- 193
Number of countries in the world with a US military installation -- 100+

Since when is asking a question "sticking his nose" in anything?

Yes. Of course. That is why his original post asked:

Thank you for posting what Cannon AFB is there for.

I'm still not convinced that it plays an indispensable role.

Oh, and BTW:

How is the above different from a personal attack? That is against the TOS.

I argue with GregW all the time about his (self-admitted) left-wing tendencies.
I've never felt the need to personally attack him.

I win the arguments every time through skill and reason. Just axe him.

How's about linking that bad boy for us?

BTW--your defense budget will go up when you have militaries which are actually CAPABLE of doing something. Just ask the Russians and their submarine fleet which is more or less rusting at the pier, etc. And it's easy to keep costs down when China pays their conscripts a few bucks a month as compared to the $1400/mo that any E-1 gets the first day of boot camp, plus housing, food, etc.

Those cost money, dontcha know.

[MOD EDIT - No personal attacks.]

All that being said, Cannon does fulfill a purpose, BRAC notwithstanding. BTW, for the previous poster, Subase Groton was on the list too. Just because it's on the list 1--doesn't mean it will be closed, 2--doesn't mean it makes sense.

And mortimer, there's that little thing called "treaty obligation". Look it up.

Once again, CONTEXT FAIL. All of ya.

So you can't be bothered to look up a simple thing like annual military expenditures therefore requesting a link?

Then you finish the post with a demand that I look up something regarding a treaty without thoughtfully providing a cite?
( somewhat hypocritical )

.... google ....

[Results 1 - 10 of about 46,300,000 for treaty ...]

Hmmm. Where should I start? Where SHOULD I start?

Oh, and still nothing on exactly why Cannon is specifically needed.
I'm not saying it's not needed, I'd just like to know why.
Just saying that they do some sort of work there isn't sufficient.

Awww...whazza matter?

[MOD EDIT - No personal attacks.]

See, this is how you provide a link:

http://www.cannon.af.mil/

http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/123746.pdf (broken link)

And to answer your question as to why Cannon is needed? Two words: Special Operations.

Greg makes a valid point.

Not really, given the nature of current threats. Elgin has grown out as far as it can, and we need more desert training for all of our forces. Cannon is isolated enough to provide some secrecy and still give good, realistic, desert/mountain training to the aircrews.

Again, just because it's in BRAC doesn't mean 1--it's gonna happen, 2--it makes sense. Nah, politicians NEVER do anything for purely political reasons, do they?

You get that a lot. I find that people that cannot respond with facts
and have to do the "personal attack" thing are not suitable for discussions.

Again, I asked for a helpful link. This is a 471 page document.
From your post, you implied that you knew what you were talking about.
If you do, you would post the link - describing what it was ( this was not
done ) and then you would reference the specific page if you could not
provide the URL to the specific page containing the proof of your claim.
You would ( if you knew how ) also edit the link so that was descriptive.

Here: I'll do it for you. Please learn from this.
"United States Department of State
Treaties in Force
A List of Treaties ... "

There is no room for condensation in a post's tone when the poster
clearly does not know how to perform the tast that the poster is
being condescending about.

Again, for the third ( or fourth, I've lost count ) you have failed to provide
a reason that Cannon AFB should exist. Saying that they either have a
barracks, a plane, or some operation such as those "Two words" mentioned
above is not justification for keeping it at Cannon vs consolidating it at
a place like Edwards or some other place.

There are always redundancies in a large organization, like the military.
If that organization cannot compensate and adapt to those redundancies
it will eventually fail.

I'm sure there is a reason and ( I think ) I'm glad that Cannon is there,
but you, clearly, have no idea why they have to be there and not
somewhere else.
