Carlsbad doesn't have a lot of top of the line motels but when I spend the night there Motel 6 has always worked for me. It's on the south end of town on Canal St., and the Golden Corral restaurant is right next to it. And believe it or not, their summer rate is quite reasonable, I believe right now it's just a tad over $30 for one person. Like Mortimer pointed out, it's pretty warm in the summer there. Temps start hitting 90 in May and stay that way till late September. But you'll really enjoy the caverns!

A couple of comments based on our last vacation/recon trip to NM.

In San Antonio Manny's Buckhorn Saloon has better chili cheese burger than the Owl. There is a drug store and soda shop in Carrizozo that is a must stop. For the space techs the Space History Museum in Alamogordo is also a must see. They have one of Dr. Goddard's first generation liquid fuel rockets there. There is also a very good railroad museum in town. Lots of hotels are available.

We then went west around the Gila Wilderness so that part of our trip won't apply. However, if you want to have a neat walk the Catwalk near Glenwood is unique. Then there is the road to Mogollon. That is a great road. You can check your own taillights on some of the switchbacks.

I suggest finding a copy of the “Off the Beaten Path” for New Mexico as well as “Interesting Drives in NM”. Both books are very informative.

Alright..so this long awaited trip starts tomorrow! Much to my husbands surprise.. we are NOT going to the Santa Fe rodeo and out to breakfast as I have been telling him for weeks!
So..I decided that we will start out early from Santa Fe and head to White Sands. Hopefully therell be a place in the vacility to spend the night. Saturday morning we will head to Carlsbad and spend the night again and than head back to Santa Fe on the back roads.
Los Lunas for food, Socorros Bosque (and homemade fudge) than White Sands on day one. Day two the adventure to the caverns. And on the way home its the racetrack, Carrizoz drug store, Disco taco and possibly Valley of Fires if time allows. Sound like a pretty good plan?
I am going to stop off at the book store this afternoon and pick up one of the travel books mentioned above as well.
If anyone has any more "must seens", especially for day two which is a bit lacking in events, jump on board!
Oh! It was suggested that we visit the tram in ABQ. Actually..much to MY surprise.. we went lastnight. Amazing! What great food/wine and a steller sunset after the rainstorm!

Thanks again everyone and have a great weekend! (I know I will!!)

Fischer_girl,

Have fun on your trip. That is a lot of ground to cover in a few days, but it should be fun. Let us know how it turns out.

I will be in Ruidoso over the weekend. I have to meet with the Forest Department on Monday to see if we need to thin out the trees on our lot for fire protection.

If you're interested in seeing rock art, the Three Rivers Petroglyph Area (about 30 miles south of Carrizzo) is terrific. Personally, I think there are more and better petroglyphs than at Petroglyph Natl Monument in Abq.

Fischer_girl: If you possibly can, make the drive around the Enchanted Circle north of Santa Fe. It's beautiful and you won't regret it.
