Default Jobs in the winter? Carlsbad area.

We were down in the Guads for a couple of days last winter and enjoyed it so much that we would like to spend this upcoming winter there. We would prefer to be near Carlsbad, but anywhere in the Guads would be great. We are avid cavers and don't want to have to drive too far to get to them.

While we are there, I am hoping to aquire a job. The town of Carlsbad looked pretty darn empty while we were there last Feb/Mar. I assume that the jobs dry up around that time too. Am I correct? Any suggestions on finding jobs around that area remotely?

Our backgrounds are pretty specific and unlikley to be useful there: Unix Administration. I am open to any positions just to make extra money while in the area. Ofcourse we would love to work somewhere like Carlsbad Caverns, but I haven't seen anything open there.

Thanks in advance.

I think unless you work as a ranger for the caverns all the hiring out there is done through someone else. My son used to work out there in foodservices but I can't remember the name of the company that hired him. I don't know what you are interested in doing out there but you might call the Caverns and ask them. As for jobs in Carlsbad I think alot work for the oil companies, we lived in Carlsbad for 2 yrs but my hubby was a federal employee so we didn't have to worry about jobs.

All federal jobs at Carlsbad Caverns National Park and at Guadalupe Mountains National Park are advertised through USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site. An easy way to search is to type Carlsbad New Mexico in the search location area. Currently we have an Elevator Operator advertised at the caverns.

That was a good one jaxart. My aunt's husband serviced those elevators back in the 60's. Otis elevators, I believe. I've been to Carlsbad a few times. Friendly folks. Reminds me of San Angelo, Texas. One time my father needed directions to someplace in town there. An older gentleman was walking along the side of the road. Dad stopped to ask for directions. The old fellow's answer was "No Senor, me no know that. But, me know where Rosalita lives.". We gave him a ride to the house he wanted to go to and he grinned the whole way. Dad and Mom laughed about that for years.
