3) Where In New Mexico and Why = 1st choice= Socorro because of New Mexico Tech, lower prices, lower taxes, clear skies, mild dry winter.

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = Can’t afford to retire yet, mortgage to pay, Spousal resistance, inertia.

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don’t know? = I expect to supplement retirement income with odd jobs, writing, painting and/or jewelry. I will get a dual purpose m’cycle and ride every day.
Hey Greg, I wanted you to know that we drove by Socorro today and mentioned your name. It certainly must mean good karma for your move. We had lunch earlier at the Owl Bar and Cafe (best green chile cheeseburgers in the world) in San Antonio, NM and my husband suggested putting the point of a compass midway between the Owl and Pecos and drawing a circle on the map as a way of deciding on our final retirement location.

clairz - Manny's Saloon across the street makes better cheesburgers than the Owl.

Ha! I'd have to disagree. I think it's just that you have to wait so long to get your burger in Manny's that you drink a lot of beer and the burger just SEEMS better than the Owl's. On the other hand, the green chile cheeseburgers from the Blue Ribbon Bar and Grill in Estancia are pretty fine.

I'd say, viva the search for the best! It sure is fun sampling them around the state and keeping the controversy alive... Have to get up to the Bobcat Bite next.

Oh, and we finally got around to trying the famous homemade fudge just up the road from the Owl. Mmmmm.

That's a hard one for me to do, but I will do my best!!

1) Current City and State =

Greendale, WI (inner-ring suburb of Milwaukee, WI)

2) Why do you want to leave =

-Miss ABQ / NM incredibly (left in mid-2007)
-The year-round climate / weather
-The culture / vibe
-The topography
-The food
-Taxes / cost of living / cost of housing
-Did I mention the weather?
-(I could go on and on and on, however, need to keep this one "short and sweet" per the OP)...

3) Where In New Mexico and Why =

-Albuquerque; It was my home from 03-07 and I love the town. Mildly prefer the weather of Las Cruces, but need the size, jobs, economy, and amenities and all else that beautiful, sweet Albuquerque provides!

4) 2nd and 3rd Place States =

-Texas (El Paso)...this won't ever happen though, as much as I love El Paso; it would be more Las Cruces (Southern NM)

-Kentucky (Louisville area); much closer to friends / family in Milwaukee (6 hour drive instead of 20+ hours) with a great city-population for my tastes (under 1-million metro but close to it) and good year-round temps with still 4 seasons

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving =

1. Job offer
1a. Job offer
2. Job offer
3. Ummmm....job offer.

I need a good job that semi-lives up to my salary (and professional) expecations. Willing to take a pay cut from where I am up here, but not willing to do something for $35K or $40K anymore. I also need something that somewhat fulfills my professional expectations.

Damn jobs / money-needed-to-pay-bills/support-families. If not for that, I would've been back in ABQ 1 year ago already.

As it is, I would have been back in ABQ / NM yesterday with a great job offer. However, this might be my final downfall / obstacle from returning to the land that I love!

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we dont know? =[/quote]

Lived in ABQ from 03-mid 07. In my early 30s...wife and I relocated "back home" to be close to friends and family after a few young kids born in ABQ; regret the hell of that move back and desparately have missed ABQ for almost the entire time. Would shave a knuckle off gladly (give me the knife!) to move back to ABQ...I love it...

1) Orlando, FL..ugh

2) Muggy weather most of the year, traffic, high crime across the board, high rent, bad people, and retarded drivers..they're worse here than NM!

3) Albuquerque because most of my friends from college eventually migrated there. Plus how many cities have 10,000 ft mountains just east of them?

4) Central Arizona, Utah, Colorado.

5) A job paying about as much as I get now. Granted that's in the works as I type this message..

6) New Mexico is a state you take for granted until you leave and realize life in general is a little bit easier there, and people are a bit more sincere.

1) Current City and State = Chicago, IL.

2) Why do you want to leave = Winter kills! Traffic is hurrendous! Summers are short.

3) Where In New Mexico and Why = Albuquerque/Santa Fe, because I like this size of a metro (closer to a million than 1/2 a million, and not over 2 million) with lot's of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, skiing), and awesome food, and great festivals and museums.

4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = Colorado, Arizona.

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = My other-half's family lives here in Chicago and I made a compromise that we would stay here a little longer.

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we dont know? = I yearn for mountains and a more mild climate.
