Austin, Tx

Ok not Southwest but South. And has alot of tree hugging hippies there. With a music scene, South by Southwest.

I think the OP should start looking toward cities. The SW just isn't known for its towns. Sure there are a lot of tiny, little towns (hippi-less enclaves :-) but population centers in the SW generally jump from ~20,000 to ~750,000+ with very little in between. There are some exceptions, of course but they are few and far between.

I go along with Tucson. It's similar in size and character to Burlington ( I used to live there), has a good climate, is close enough to Phoenix and you can easily explore CA if you have a mind to. Also it has to be cheaper than Burlington- I paid $1150 for a 1 bdrm there about 5 years ago!

I would have to recommend Austin, TX. It's very "hippie" and has a great eclectic feel. It has a great live music scene. The winter is good because of the college is going. Patios are usually open year round and it can be in the 70's in December. We may get some cold fronts but nothing like what you have up there. There are also alot of easy living options. Alot of people will rent out a room or a converted garage if you aren't looking to spend alot of money and are really after the "hippie" lifestyle.

That's funny. We're doing the same thing. We are wanting to leave Austin and head into the Ruidoso area. We're tired of the heat, traffic, stress...blah blah. I've only lived in the city for a couple of years but it's enough for me. We're just ready to get away.

Funny. We were passing thru T or C last night on our way home, and main street was full of hippies, gypsies, cowboys, indians, and maybe eveything in between. They were playing guitars, tambourines, drums, clarinets, trumpets, a bit of eveything. Even beer in go cups. Go figure.

Ruidoso is one of my favorite places in NM, but I don't know how hippy, liberal it is? In fact I don't think it would fall into that catagory as much as Sante Fe, Taos, etc.
