Default Great Small Towns List??

well catman, this thread definitely, does not agree with what you've read somewhere. most of the posts here in this thread are "mainly true". I myself have never lived in, or experienced a town such as this one. you live in fort worth (dallas) area? I can tell you that your area has, much, much, much more to offer than this town has, and I hope you weren't thinking of relocating, because if you are, please prepare to be shocked. by chance, was lawrenceville, illinois on that list of great small towns? and what about madison, indiana? these are both river towns, that have a heck of a lot more to offer than this dusty place ever will. in time, there is supposed to be a "spaceport and racetrack" built here in T or C, but one has to wonder, what types of people are these two things supposed to attract? the rich and elite?
this thread doesn't lie, it is the truth. whomever wrote that T or C was one of the best small towns to live in, must have either been paid off to say that, or, they were seriously misinformed! if you yourself have ever visited a dumpy looking town, imagine that if you will, but at least 5 times worse. not to mention the bi-polar's wandering the streets here. but, don't take my word for it, you're close enough that you could visit here and see for yourself.
This town is not best suited or geared for the young or middle aged, it is best suited as a tourist trap for the "Butte", and for the elderly/retired people who escape the cold winters of the north. I've done a bit of research, and this area seems to be the least expensive for retirees/elderly to escape the winter snows, e.g, arizona is kind of expensive, as is nevada, california, texas, and some other southern states. not that T or C is the cheap place, because by comparing prices in our newly built walmart to the one in las cruces, prices here seem to be about 10 to 24 percent higher, and I'm at a loss as to why this is, maybe it's the cost of transporting goods or services to T or C. the retail sales tax in T or C is about 7.2%, while in the state of texas, it exceeds 8%, and sometimes, this can be a factor to people when considering where to go for the winter. one good thing about new mexico, there is NO SALES TAX on food, however, when the price for a gallon of gas is $3.44 as a national average, the price for a gallon of gas in T or C can be as much as 30 cents higher. gas is still cheaper in las cruces, 70 miles to the south. go figure??? so, are retailers gouging the people here in T or C? I think so because I can't think of one reason why we're paying more for everything.
In summation, T or C is a nice, well maybe, place to visit, but frankly, I don't know why anyone has to, or want's to live here. I've only been here 3 years, and I'm well done! Burnt toast.

Thumbs down Tough As A Coconut!

TorC requires resources to exist there. You CAN'T do it on the cheap. Pensions, annuities, successful investments and the like are mandatory if you cannot secure employment somehow or are not rolling in dinero. It's a very tough nut to crack. The possibilities raised by the race track and the spaceport may help infuse life into the region and invigorate TorC specifically, but I'm not holding my breath. I do love the area and intend to settle there despite the obvious difficulties of doing so eventually, but it's going to be a complex tango indeed. My wife and I are considering various gigs in combinations and even commuting to LC if need be. I know I cannot stand Denver much longer. The bitter, venomous political polemics, the repellent self-satisfied yuppies, the cabbage-headed religious zealots, the legions of west-side gangsta's, the brutal winters, the high cost of living, the sheer size of this place and the overwhelming human NUMBERS...I've hit the wall. My wife hit the wall about two YEARS ago; "we gotta get outta this place...if it's the last thing we ever do"!!!

Exclamation More Proof That T or C Is Not One Of The 10 Best

Today, a trip to Las Cruces, gas prices in T or C, $3.79 - $3.81 per gallon.
Las Cruces (70 miles south of T or C) gas prices $3.49 per gallon, go figure!!!???
Why the $0.32 difference ???
Answer: Tourist town?
I get it now, gouge the visitors of T or C, and, the residents too while they're at it!!!
I should have named myself FEDUP instead of highdesertmutz!
Some city-data users might see me as a whiner, but I don't. I want to expose corruption. and, this is about as corrupt as it gets. if some view me as a whiner, come and live here for awhile, and you'll see for yourself what a rinky-dink place this is.
I wrote Gov. Richardson about the fuel prices here in T or C months ago. do you know the reply I received? thank you for writing the gov., your email is very important to us. really? Bullony.
Are you retired? Snowbirds? coming to T or C for the winter? allright! but, park your rv and drive your gas sipper, you'll need all the $$$ to pay extra for foods, fuel, or just everyday living expenses.

Right on big fella! I am going to open some kind of training facility in the general region, along with a tattoo shop and art gallery for my crazy images (not sure if it will be in TorC, the Butte or LC). My wife will be doing her nursing gig in one form or another. I may also drive trucks as I have a PUC license on a part time basis. I've also thrown my hat into the ring for a Sheriff's Deputy job if a position comes up.

I've noted that small, personal training gyms are sprouting up everywhere as many people don't like large mega clubs, like Bally's, 24 Hour Fitness and similar multimillion buck emporiums. The smaller places can even be across the street from the mega-plex gyms and still survive!!! I'm strongly encouraged. I'll get my certification updated as a trainer and right now I'm getting back into heavy cardio to drop about 25 pounds...need to look the part even though I'm an old has-been!

You will always be welcome and a lifetime free pass is yours dude!

Sturgis is on a distinguished road
If I recall correctly, 1 person owns most if not all the gas stations in the area. And when walmart was buying the piece of property from this person the unsubstantiated rumor is that walmart NOT putting in gas pumps was part of the contract.

If this is accurate, goes far to explain the jacked up gas prices. Why are they higher? Because he can.

Thumbs down NOW That's What I Call Progress !!

You may be right about that.
I wonder, do the same people or company that owns the fueling stations also own the local pay laundry?
The old laundry, now closed, next door to IGA, used to get $1.00 to wash, and $0.25 to dry. They closed that operation and opened a newer facility on the south side and the new washers cost $2.50 to $2.75, and to dry is still $0.25 with less minutes and drying efficiency, and, it's the only public pay laundry I know of in T or C, so, when you're the only "Game In Town", you can pretty much get away with screwing the consumer. and, by the way, the laundry facility is the place where I noted numerous code violations, e.g., loose bricks above the doorway, no cover plates over electrical boxes, and so forth, what a class act!!! a little humor. the building inspection department has been out to lunch for awhile.

The only gym in the area, Jungle Gym in the Butte, gets away with treating its customers and clients in a very casual and inconvenient fashion...similar to the gas station/laundry mat debacle mentioned above. Same reason presumably: she's the only act in town. I aim to change all that and offer REAL service and availability...no more closing the only facility in the region down so she can attend some event or employ some other arbitrary excuses for not providing access. I've heard many complaints along these lines. Unfortunate.

dracul - Before you make too many plans check out the local Chamber of Commerce, Planning Board, Building Dept, Sherrif's office etc and the NM State Business listings. Compare names to see if a small clique is locking up opportunities. Always be careful of local monopolies. They really hate competition.
