University of New Mexico
Hi everyone and thanks for your help on my previous thread. I am leaving this Sunday to come out for a visit.
My question is regarding the UNM. Can anyone tell me about the reputation of the school and any other applicable info. It would be very helpful to me.
Thanks in advance

Not in Top 60
I just looked at the US News and World Report rankings for Public Universities and UNM is not in that list.
But how good UNM is will very much depend on the degree program you enter. Some programs are well thought of and others are not. Anthro used to be one of the tops in the country bakc when Hibbin was teaching. It is something less than that now. Most of the school is probably middle of the range. Just do your homework, and focus on the degree program, and not the school as a whole. And remember, it was good enough for one of the Kennedy clan to finish his med school work here!

As far as state universities go, I have seen UNM ranked in the third tier.
However, there are departments that are well regarded, as Disenchanted mentioned, the medical school has been ranked amoung the top (I believe for its family practice programs).
That being said, my husband and I graduated from UNM many, many moons ago and our daughters graduated from there, one, a year and a half ago and the other, last December. I think we all received competent educations.
It is my belief that any university can offer a motivated student more that he can ever learn.

Unm
Just remember that the majority of graduates of UNM are from New Mexico.
That's why one of it's nicknames is University Near MOM.
P.S. I have 2 undergraduate degrees and one post graduate degree from there.

My daughter is starting there in a couple of weeks as a freshman from massachusetts. (I am also moving there then to be closer to my elderly parents.)
ANyway, she was accepted into the honors program and awarded an Amigo scholarship - which offers in-state tuition to out of state students. I am only paying about 11-12K per year to send her to college! WHo can beat that! She is also a golfer, which is great at UNM. As far as the education, I have talked to a few doctors at Presbyterian Hospital right down the road who are highly regarded orthopedic surgeions who attended UNM medical and said it was the best education for the money. And they were talking about the undergraduate program as well. I highly recommend trying to get into the honors program because those classes are only taught by full professors, not teaching assistants, are much smaller than typical classes at a big state U, and the students are offered lots of on-campus perks, like special housing. Also, the adobe architecture is cool to look at, and right in the middle of campus is a beautiful duck pond. Hope this all helps. good luck!
