Me too! Haven't searched for any other Silver threads on CD, but "info" is what I'm looking for. I've spent time there before, but I'm planning on going there in April or May for the summer. I'm in an RV, and looking to get involved. I looked at their Health Council website, and it seems like there's alot of 'community spirit' in Silver City.
I've been getting to know such nice people on City-Data forums, but until now, I haven't been reading the SC-related threads. It would be nice to meet some ppl before I get there---either locals, or those like Kelly, who are heading there.
I know of several RV parks there, but does anyone have any reccomendations?
And, what about internet service?
I always hear ppl mention the bad 'gang' problem there.. is it any worse than other places?

Default Hearing from locals

Hello, I have lived in Silver City for 6 years. I am renting and do not have information on land or buying homes. I did see mention here about gangs. I would not be concerned about that. I would feel safe anywhere here at night..or day. There is one neighborhood I would not live in though. It would be ok, but I would feel out of place.
This town has alot of pluses. The weather. The friendliness. The beauty. There are many many social activities. This town is very active on providing entertainment and stimulation.
Everything does have its flip side. I want to leave because it is so dry. Allergies are miserable here for many. The higher elevation has given me migraines. It is just too dry for my health here.
Also, regardless of the activities, beauty and outdoors, I do not fit in with the type of people who have come here. If you do fit in, it is quite fulfilling to be here. You have found your happy place. Alot of people here are happy. However, if you do not have the same life style, you can feel lonely here. I have never felt so alone. I have to leave. I am not a coffe-shop person, I dont want to go to social events, drumming circles, and the like. There is no where in this small town that I can just go out and be incognito, blending into an activity...like shopping centers or a movie. You either have to come as a couple or you get your stimulation by being social. Where I came from I could go hiking by myself and be safe. Here is is too rugged, huge and has dangers. So I am limited to being able to hike alone.
It is great, but for me and many others, it is not a good fit. I actually want to go somewhere where things are "more normal?" I am tired of having to live the "cool life" if I want to just have something to do. I am concidering going to Portland where I have a son there and it is beautiful but there are more activities I can do on my own. I have heard of plenty of others who have gone for the same reasons. Dryness, not enough variety of things to do to fit different life-styles and can be lonely if you are not the right fit.

I'm glad you posted about Silver City Kinasia.....as i never had seen any gangs or bad problems whenever i've visited over the years .

My favorate drive in all of New Mexico is from Silver City on U.S. 180 on over to Reserve and then over to Magdalena and Socorro. When it swings over close to Arizona it's the most awesome mountainous views i've seen below Colorado or Western Montana especially around Alpine. I just roll down my windows and smell the strong scented pine for miles upon miles when i travel that road.

6/3

Default 180 Drive

The Blues Festival information:
Mimbres Region Arts Council - 13th Annual Silver City Blues Festival - 2008
[SIZE=4]May 23 - 25, 2008
Here is a sampling of all the social activites that Silver City is known for:
Events calendar for Silver City and Grant County, New Mexico, presented by the Silver City - Grant County Chamber of Commerce

Yes, 6 Foot 3, that drive up Highway 180 is why I moved to Silver City. I drove down from Gallup and when close to Silver City, oh how wonderful. I thought that I had to live in Silver City after taking that drive.

I hope you have a blast there Anomoly as the Mogollon Mountains there are vast, green and fun. Have you ever been to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. There's also some cool lakes i remember up there like Lake Roberts, Snow Lake and Wall Lake and also the Gila River. One of the best preserved Ghost Towns in NM is the town of Mogollon as i believe lots of artists inhabitate it now.

You can take out a map and draw a straight line from Silver City all the way across and up to Flagstaff Arizona and see nothing but mountain after mountain of HUGE peaks and Pine trees for those hundreds of miles.

Wow, I reaaallly appreciate all the info and opinions, Kinasia, 6/3, and others!
About the gang thing, that's exactly what I thought (not a problem). Sometimes people don't have alot of experience with other places, or they believe everything they read... I've heard it several times, and have no way of verifying public opinion. Luckily, no allergies to worry about.
Happy to know about internet access, too.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going there in Apr or May, and since I'm in an RV, I can leave anytime.
And I HOPE people keep posting here, so I can feel 'familiar' before I get there.
I'm just tired of being a 'gypsy', without any connections or involvement, or contributions I can make. I'm not working, so I don't have to worry about that, but I'm not a 'senior' yet, and enjoy 'making a difference'.

I came up with a question that will help me, as a night person:
What's the town like at 9pm?
I don't mean just 'entertainment'. I mean, is there traffic on the street? Are stores open? Is it just bar-people out?
Where I'm at now, there's no sign of life after 8 or 9, and most businesses and downtown are closed and empty after 5 or 6.

6 FOOT THREE: Thanks for the beautiful photo of the Mogollon Range. I definitely need to ride out that way on my motorcycle later on.

anomoly: I'm a night person too. (it's 2 AM!). I just got back from playing a gig. I will be interested in the answer to your query.
