TiaMia i used to live in Florida. While i can't speak for Silver Cityas i'ved never lived there i do the difference between Florida and Silver city as i would say Silver is a small version of Lake City or Ocala but with mountains all around it. Definately not the tropical areas of Florida if that gives you an thought comparing both areas. Think more of the Panhandle areas.

Silver City and Florida might as well be on different planets.

Hopefully, this meant with positive connotation. I am moving from Bradenton FL to Silver City in 3 weeks and counting. OMG. Did I choose wrong? I am already anxious about finding my niche there. I hope people don't frown on me because I am coming from FL. I know there is some animosity re: Californians moving in and driving up prices. No worries, peeps! I'm 28 and only building up my very modest savings, so mi dinero is tight!
I hope I make friends. I have already made contact with one nice lady from Silver City (on this forum ), and hope to make plenty more.
I need help with suggestions where to live (I am in a hotel for the first several weeksl, until I find a place). Ideas? Also, is there a hiking club? Anyone have an excellent MD or DO (generous with time, empathetic) they would care to share the name of? Is there a hiking club or anything like that?
Thanks, everyone. I am excited, but highly nervous and I'm already missing all my loved ones.

Ft. Bayard Med Center is a state run nursing facility. They have had a terrible past. But things have improved. They lost their medicaid funding and it has been restored. A management company is helping to run it and things have improved tremendously. Rehab seems great, nursing seems to care and the managing company is making big, good changes.

I was not making a favorable comment on south and central Florida. The only good thing I can say about "the villages" is that they make a lot of people happy and keep them away from the places I like. Like Silver City.
On our last trip we stayed in Silver at the historic hotel and had a good time in the town.. The town looked like a good place for retiring and/or starting a business providing things that retired people need.
If you want to really get away try a few days in Mogollon. Next trip we will visit the Gila springs and historic ruins. I have heard that the steaks at the Buckhorn Saloon in Pinos Altos are worth the trip.

Just wondering where the closest XC skiing can be found? I know it all depends on weather, but are there areas in the Gila that keep some snow base? Thanks for any replies.

No skiing in Silver City, I'm afraid. You might be able to go up into the Gila Wilderness for a few weeks out of the year, but a year round snowpack just does not happen here.
I've been living here since 1975, and some of the info here is accurate, some out of date. Silver City is a great place to live, but the economy has always been a little bit lower here than nationally, but it's also usually a lot cheaper to live here, so no worries.
There are a few venues to play music here, but not a lot. You certainly could not make a living as a musician here, but there are a lot of local musicians. I play drums, but am not currently in a band.

Wow, things must have really changed since 2006 when we left there. I did not see that it was cheaper to live there, Silver City had some of the highest gas prices in NM, rent was outrageous if you could find something to rent, forget buying houses for a decent price unless they were dumps and groceries were expensive. It's nice to hear things have changed, to bad I didn't let my hubby put in for that job in Lordsburg, but I didn't think we would be able to find anything to rent. Wish I would have known this about 4 months ago.
