Everyone is always so informative on this forum! I am very interested in any info on Ruidoso...I can't believe how beautiful it looks from what I've seen online! We all know though sometimes that can be deceiving.. It looks like the kind of place that we would be very happy. This is one of two areas we are considering (the other is north of Abq.) Nothing like points of view from people who have been or live there. Most important considerations are schools and medical care. Thanks so much!

Ruidoso is a tourist town. Real estate there is VERY expensive. Not as expensive as Taos or Santa Fe, but still very high for New Mexico. Main attractions are the skiing, the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort, casinos, and horse racing.

I don't know much about schools and crime there. Sorry.

You will love ruidoso. I lived there for about six years and hope to someday get back. It is a tourist town (texans pretty much own it) soo it is expensive to purchase real estate. They have a nice little medical center. All the major medical stuff gets sent to larger cities. Not sure about the schools.

Will you be seeking employment in Ruidoso? Employment was the main reason my wife and I had to move. Not many good jobs in ruidoso.

The main problem with ruidoso is the lack of water. Seem like they are always in stage 5 water restrictions.
But when they do get rain there is nothing better than kicking back, having a cool pint of your favorite lager and enjoying the cool mountain air.
The race track is fun also.

Thanks y'all! Living next to Charleston, SC, I'm used to tourists, so I know how crowded it can get in the season. I'm about 20 miles inland from the Atlantic so I have to get used to conserving water...so much to learn!! I hope my husbands business will allow him to call Ruidoso home, we'll see, I'm just a lowly EMT so if you knew how much we make you would cry!!lol~ Currently out or work though, a lovely human in a hurry T-boned my vehicle and injured my spine...hope to get back though, miss those lights and sirens!! So anyway hopefully I can find something, just to supplement our income...gotta kick back and enjoy a cool one! Cool mountain air? OMG! That's enough to sell me...you should be in real estate yb! I love South Carolina, but the humidity is something else... thanks again, if anyone knows about the schools that would be greatly appreciated!

Does Ski Apache offer cross country skiing? I looked on the website and they mentioned skiing and snowboarding but nothing about cross country.

No, Ski Apache does not offer cross country skiing, just downhill. There's little opportunity for this anywhere in NM, especially southern New Mexico. The problem is that the only places that get enough snowpack to support skiing with any regularity are higher elevation mountains, which tend to be more vertical than horizontal. We're just too far south for this.

No.

Another problem? Being so far south, some years they don't get very much snow.

Last season, they were never more than 12% open the entire time.

:-(

Hopefully, this season will be a lot better.

We are thinking of moving to Ruidoso NM in the Fall. Currently in Norcal for 7 years and CO for 18 prior to that. Love Mts and would like a home overlooking a lake. Housing seems very reasonable and climate same as here.
Any input?

Ruidoso is very much a tourist town --- skiiing in winter, horseracing, camping, and gambling. Many, many local businesses are owned by Texans, and there is a bit of tension over that among locals. Sometimes you'll hear Texans referred to as "Tex-asses" around town.

Warm in the summer. Cold in winter.

They do sometimes suffer from drought conditions. (It is NM after all.) When I was last there three years ago in summer, the mountains were all brown and the air dusty because they'd had no rain in months. Forest fires become a major concern when that happens.
