I live in Silver City. The only thing I have found here is that Billy was arrested for stealing some clothes from a Chinese Laundry in Georgetown (near Silver City) and was put in jail. Because of his young age (about 15) he was not put in a cell and he escaped by climbing out thru the chimney! I think he left Silver City right away and went to Arizona. I know of no record that says here ever returned to Silver city. His mother (there's controversy about whether or not she's his mother) is buried in Silver City.
When a man's only chance was his own forty-four.
When Billy the Kid was a very young lad
In old Silver City he went to the bad
Way out in the West with a gun in his hand
At the age of twelve years he did kill his first man.
I like many of Marty Robbins songs, but they are not to be considered historically accurate.

I seem to recall that it was in Silver City that William McCarty/Bonney is known to have gotten in trouble with the law for the first time. I believe that is what the song refers to. How much of the story is actual and how much is embellishment is hard to sort out today.
As for Marty Robbin's songs, being a "native born" El Pasoan, his song of El Paso is of course my favorite and the song he is usually most recognized for. The part about "Rosa's Cantina" is pure fiction, although there is a contemporary cafe north of El Paso that lays claim to being the model for Robbin's song. It's possible that Robbin's once ate there, but as far as I know it was never a "cantina" - implying a bar or saloon environment with lady "hostesses" doing business.

I love the song. Here is my attempt at an animation a couple of years ago while just fooling around. The building is an actual adobe structure in the town of Bernallio:
Thanks! I have always been interested in animation. About every five years or so I try animation with the newer technology. It is easier now, but still it is time consuming.
