I am considering moving to Bernalillo, Corrales or Rio Rancho and have 3 dogs. Should I be worried about letting my dogs out into a walled yard during the day or night because of wildlife in the area? Any suggestions about keeping them safe?

I wouldn't keep my dogs out at night anywhere.

Depends! What type of dogs? There are tons of coyotes around that can and will make quick work of little yap dogs. I would be more worried at night and in the early morning.

Thanks for the quick response.

I have a Beagle, black Lab mix and a Cocker Spaniel. They'd only be allowed to go out at night to relieve themselves. Other than some supervised playtime outside in between walks, they'd be indoors.

My main concern is if the coyotes would jump the wall to get into the yard. My dogs have already dealt with rabbits, snakes, frogs and feral cats here in Texas but since they are hunters by nature, I also want to protect other critters from THEM!

I would not have any problems leaving any of those 3 out in the blocked yard. The coyotes will jump over to make supper out of a little dog. They will lure the bigger dogs out and kill them with the pack. Usually one dog per one coyote to start out. Then when the dogs follow a ways out at least one or more coyotes will show for the dinner work.

I have a mid and a large size dog and I leave them out all day in the back blocked yard. I have also seen coyotes walking down the street looking for cats and roaming dogs.

Great info, _yb.

Sections of Austin, TX have experienced the same problem. This will help me narrow down what style house I should buy. Thanks again.

Local Coyote on the Rio Rancho/Corrales border. There is a pair, have watched them go behind houses looking for food. Saw them last time less than a week ago. This one was looking through the gate to a back yard which sometimes has dogs in the yard.

Your info is helpful. I'll look for a house with an interior courtyard.

pat1145, I have lived in Rio Rancho 10 years with two dogs. I currently have a 40 and 60 pound Collies, they are well trained indoor dogs. They get walked every day. They are outside while someone is home. I have not had Coyote problems. Have actually had more problems with dogs running loose. I have a block wall surrounding my back yard and my dogs can not jump it, but some yards have lower walls or some dogs are able to jump and get out. I have never seen the remains of a dog which have appeared to be attacked by coyotes. I have seen fresh rabbit and hare remains in the open space, but never dogs. The only dog remains I have ever seen have been where it appears to have been hit by a vehicle. That has been my observation by walking the area daily for 10 years.

My dogs are mostly inside. They are all 3 large and intimidating.
We have a fenced area for them to go and do there business and they get exercised daily but the problem here, like Rich's area are the dogs running loose all the time. One has come around wanting to fight. One dog got out of the fenced area and they fought until the other dog left the yard.
I haven't had any problems with coyotes and mountain lions but they are here from what I've heard and I just wouldn't leave my dogs out at night and I can't think of anyone here that has dogs that leaves them out at night.
