I have been told that UNM's dorms were recently voted as among the very worst in the country. He might want to live in an apartment. It tends to be a commuter school.
The area near campus has some good but inexpensive restaurants, and some stores, and businesses of the sort you might expect to find near a university. Most people seem to consider it so-so for crime, not so much during the day, but at night. I have walked around some at night and I don't think it's too bad, but I have mostly been either on Central Avenue or on campus. I think serious crime is less an issue than the inconvenience of pan-handlers and drunks and the like. (I come from a large city and the homeless pan-handlers here don't really phase me; plus their numbers are a lot smaller.)
The campus itself is pretty attractive, especially architecturally.
Incidentally, I think UNM is a pretty good school, I'm just responding to some of your specific questions, which I can't answer too positively.
