Songinthewind - I'm retired, still in pretty good shape and, like you, am not ready to spend most of my time inside doing crossword puzzles.
We live in Placitas and drive into Abq two or three times a week to see a movie, go out to dinner, go to the growers' market, go to the Hispanic Cultural Ctr., etc.
Living in Río Rancho or Bernalillo, you would be able to do similar things.
Good luck to you.

Thank you nmguy.
We're going to be checking out in your area too.
I've already had a couple of comments from folks here that say that i need to stay in Timberon and learn to knit and stuff like that.
I paint and I paint stones mostly but that's not all i want to do. When I try to explain, they still don't understand.
Maybe it is just me but I need to be doing something most of the time.

You do what suits you. I do what I do to provide for my family, not what others want me to do. I drive log trucks (laid of for 2 years), deliver drilling equipment, do septic installations, own two boats, have three houses and 395 acres of land in three states and Guatemala.

you can find many areas where the problems are not as pronounced. Of course Los Alamos is one if you want the high cost of living. There are areas in ABQ where the problems don't jump out at you and Riudoso is lovely. But no matter what, the problems exist. They are no worse than years ago I will add or I don't think they are.
Every state has something wonderful to offer and something negative. We have to decide what will work for us, what we can overlook and what we can't.
I would hate to see you too influenced by a few on these boards. It is always easier to gripe than post positives.

I agree with part of what you say, but will add, the problems in OK are not as severe as in NM. I just want to clear that up. I will also add, both states are attracting new business which is great.

I live in Santa Fe and I knit!!!
I also hike our wilderness trails, visit world class museums, enjoy incredible scenery in every direction, and have my choice of many wonderful restaurants, and meet wonderful people - both residents and visitors, take part in politics which is never boring, and in the fall I can smell green chile roasting all over town. Where I live we see wildlife and we have night skies that let us see a million stars almost every night. We have a change of seasons and right now the fall colors are brilliant.
So -- you can still knit and paint stones and still enjoy all the richness of life.
Good luck in finding your niche, Song.
And to Velvettazz -- most of the regular posters here, including me, like to discuss their own towns and hopefully we give good basic positive information. And that includes our honest opinion about the things that trouble us. Perhaps a trip back is in order to re-visit Los Alamos and other areas of the state that you think you might be interested in?
And look again at some of the posts. I think the positive posts here outnumber the negative ones.
I do not think it is particularly helpful advice for us to tell potential residents that they will love it here. I have found a few people who do not love it here and cannot wait to get out. They seem to be in the minority, but enough of them to convince me that NM is not for everyone. I just thank God that it is for me!

I would love to learn how to knit or crochet and I love doing craft things - it's just that I need more - more of the kind of other things you just mentioned in your post.
I'd like to have that option so we're working on it.
