Breaking My Heart
All the comments about NM being a welfare state and the hopelessness I feel from ALL the comments cannot be the only people who feel like this. I love NM having lived in Los Alamos although it was several years ago. The image I have in my heart may not be the same as yours; I am aware of the distinct class lines that exist but there must be those of you who have moderately successful lives and are happy to be where you live. I want to come back home. Where are you?

I think you're badly misreading and misinterpreting the postings.
When someone asks about the reality on the ground, (for the most part)
people try to give honest answers. Since most of these questions deal with
negative aspects, those are what gets discussed most.
There are a few permanently negative people on these boards but the majority
seem to be pretty happy over all. Just look at all the photo threads, restaurant
recommendations, comments about the zoo, horse country, the beauty of the
rural areas, etc., etc., etc.
If you want to get yourself wrapped around the axle about honest assessments
of the negatives and ignore everything else, feel free...

I live in Rio Rancho. My daughter and her family lives in Rio Rancho in a separate residence. We have been here over 10 years. We have enjoyed it.
Probably the worst part are those who just spew negativity about their own lives and how much they hate others.
This forum represents less than 0.01 percent of the New Mexico population. Try to glean accurate information from those who are knowledgeable and experienced in what they speak and try to ignore the rest.

I've seen more positive comments than I have negative ones.
Usually if I'm asking about a town and this probably goes for most others too, want both the good and the bad of the area. It's called honesty and another's opinion.
If you enjoy a certain area like Los Alamos, that's great. Write and let others know but everyone is different and what is good for some is not good for another.
The forum points out both and I'm happy about that.
I like NM and I like the community I'm in although I'm finding out it's not for me because I'm too isolated and too far away from a city but for others, it's ideal. We're checking out the Albq. area.
I don't see that as being negative. I see it as letting people know and thinking about what will be in store for them if they are thinking about moving to Timberon full time.
We will eventually leave here if it's meant to be and I'm glad I have this forum to find out something before I go check it out.
I also know alot of people but none are on welfare.

There might be more positive comments than negative ones, but perhaps the negative ones just stand out. The old phrase about "One bad apple"?

Song I agree with your post but sorry to hear you might be going north. Come check out our little area here. I have been in New Mexico and it is home. New Mexico has been very, very good to us.

I still want to stay in NM - I just want to be in a place where I have a choice of doing something other than being in a 'retirement' stage. Apparently I'm not ready for that. It's just my personality type.
Your area is one of my favorite areas to visit but still too isolated for me.

Song,
I lived in Tularosa for a few years, and I was ready to get the heck out of New Mexico because of the isolation, boredom, and lack of things to do. Once I moved to Santa Fe, things changed for me, and now I'm probably going to stay in New Mexico until I retire.

We're talking and working on that. We want to come up and check out the areas around Albq. like Rio rancho, Bernilillo and a few other places folks on the Albq. forum told me to check out.
I also want to say to the original poster to come back to NM and check it out. Los Alamos may or may not be what and how you remember but this state seems to have something for just about everybody and if one place doesn't work out, try another.
