Clovis Is having a HUGE housing problem.
The Clovis News Journal (cnjonline.com) interviewed Cannon Air Force Base Commander Col Stephan Clark about the housing situation. He let the City of Clovis have it, he told them they are not building fast enough to meet their needs, no rentals, and the house prices are too high. He said air force personel may be having to live in near by communities around Clovis such as Melrose, Farwell, TX, Texico, and maybe even Muleshoe,TX. Ive lived in Clovis all my life and agree with Col Clark that these prices are outrageous, they have gone up about 30,000 dollars since 2006. In todays news journel they said that the city of Clovis had a meeting to address this situation. The meeting included City officials, Mayor, builders, and Col Clark. They supposedly had a successfull meeting, I hope they figure something out soon!!!

I read that as well. The journal aslo announced that they have recieved some funds for the new middle school and new elementary. The mayor said she will get more appartments started soon, but I doubt it will be started ''soon''.

What she means by ''soon'' is next year which is too late.

I seen on a post on a different thread about this situation as well. I think it was NEW WEST that said there is a crew from Farmington building houses over in Portales.

It takes time to find interested capital, survey, pull permits, do proper environmental studies, design, pull more permits, bid the projects, build, inspect...

The government is setting on a few hundred units that have been vacant & slated for renovation for at least 2 years. Why hasn't anything happened with those units? If I was a lender or speculator, I wouldn't want to risk much. It is tough to compete against the government. They don't have to make a profit.

I noticed alot more workers and foundations getting set now that this news has come out. The base has almost 2,000 more personel coming in 5 months. Construction needs to double what they are doing and get on the ball. They should try to recruit workers.

It doesn't really work like that. The builders aren't reacting to the news, the process has probably been in the works for at least a year.

What bothers me the most is that the single airmen are the ones thats hurting the most.
Not enough room in the dorms and not enough affordable apartments that they can afford.
God help anyone who comes here after housing is full that has any pets...

Tell the Col. to rehab base housing. It is not the civilian community's job to bail out the Air Farce because they assigned more people than housing. Why should the city of Clovis take the risk that the base may close and the city is left with all the excess housing,
