it snows around Flagstaff.......then it can be icy / slippery. It is relatively flat - unlike I-70 west of Denver. If you are use to driving in CO..... you will be fine on I-40.
How does it compare to driving I-70 thru the Rockies around Denver and west..donc
Watch out for the truckers on I-40. If you are not careful they will run your a** off the road. I have driven I-70, I-80 and I-90 and they do not compare to the truckers on I-40. OMG!!!
I'll second that warning! I think cross country truckers shun the other two routes - I-70 because it's a holy terror going through the Rockies, and I-10 because it's hell on earth most of the year going through the desert. I-40 offers a relatively pleasant drive until it drops into the Mojave desert in western AZ.
..i have not yet driven I-40 to LA but after doing it thru Denver on I-70 i said no way..and I-70 is boring too after Grand Junction,CO..but hearing about lower elevation and little chance for snow encourages me..thanks...thanks for the tips about truckers..
We have done the 40 thing many times, other than being pretty boring (all those routes are, you can't make scenery where it isn't) I highly recommend it. I also will add, the boring part isn't the entire drive, mainly just from the NM border to Flagstaff. Maybe we are just accustom to the truck drivers cause we didn't find them any different than other truck drivers, just more of them. Weatherwise, Feb particularly can be a *****..isn't that the case almost everywhere though.
Thank you all for your comments..i will take the I-40 route to LA from the east rather than I-70..i've done I-70 and west of Denver is a chore and sometimes scary as in perpetual nothingness for endless miles..
Good choice! I've been on I-70 many, many times-trust me! It can be real nasty from Eagle to Denver in a snowstorm.
And it can storm in Flagstaff as well. The State patrol won't hesitate to shut the road down for adverse conditions. I'm too darn old to fight snow, and in fact I'm heading on that road at the end of this month as well. I've found Holbrook to be an ok place to stop for the night, motels are fairly cheap this time of the year (Motel 6 is $29 a night for 1 person). Denny's works for breakfast and there is an EXCELLENT Italian restaurant near the motel, name escapes me.

Agree - the part between Flagstaff to about the Painted Desert looks like something out of a Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner cartoon, but the scenery changes near NM and the Painted Cliffs on the NM/AZ state line are awesome. Also fairly close to the state line are the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest, which are worth a visit if you have a few hours to spare.
