That is true. I never had the honor of meeting him but the rest of his family are good folks.
In one of this books he talks about he and his brother Sid sticking their heads up through a hole in an old bridge when cars were coming.
I get to drive over that bridge daily.
Pretty funny stories use to come from his brother also, he just never put them down on paper.

That's a great story!
And a pretty good metaphor for Bill Mauldin's career. His willingness to tell unflinchingly what he saw coming made him one of my favorites...

Thumbs up Susan Mcsween

She's not very famous anymore but Susan Mcsween is a New Mexico treasure. She and her Husband were living in White Oaks during the Lincoln County War and were friends with Billy the Kid and the Regulators.

She became one of the most powerful ''Female Cattle Barons'' in the 1890's and early 1900's. She lived most of her life in White Oaks and is buried in the old cemetary there when she died in 1931.

Isn't Julia Roberts place near Taos, not Santa Fe? Tony Hillerman has lived here for years and is retired from the University of New Mexico where he taught Journalism. Doogie Howser is from Albuquerque - i think he went to La Cueva before he got the series. Freddie Prinz, Jr is from Albuquerque, I think. And also Phil Donahue used to live here and his ex-wife and kids lived here. I saw him and Marlo Thomas in McDonald's one time - I guess he was visiting his kids. It was years ago. Jane Fonda used to live here on the big ranch that she and Ted Turner Broadcasting owned.

After writing about Bill Mauldin and with the 64th anniversary of Normandy invasion this past Friday, I can't believe I forgot the famous Albuquerque journalist

Ernie Pyle.
