Small Town political, economic and cultural (church) aristocracies Moderator cut: Name calling, slur, attacks objectionable word etc are almost impossible to overcome. They consider the town to be their barony and their cash cow. They stay behind the scene and control the law so they will never be investigated or prosecuted. Nice gig if you can get it.
We have experienced that same thing here in New Hampshire but managed to over throw the clowns and actually install a responsible town government. It took a lot of work but was worth the effort.

Complaining. Yes, desert sun, city data does seem to have it's share of whiners.
Sometimes people have to make the best of situations, and press on. I'm sure many of us have had to do things which we didn't like, just put some sugar on it and eat it up.

I was stationed in South Korea for 1 year, unaccompanied tour. That means I did not have my family with me, I had no vehicle and I had to live in the "dorms" and share the room with a roommate. Yes, Korea sucked. I'd work out at the gym twice a day and I'd also walk 6 miles a day out of boredom. I would only go to the club or downtown on Saturday nights. I remember that becoming a "double digit midget" was a memorable milestone. After I completed my tour in Korea, the AF sent me to...Cannon AFB.
Comparing Cannon to S. Korea is ludicrous. A tour in Korea is like serving a one year sentence at a minimum security jail. Being stationed at Cannon feels more like a really BAD marriage: it never seems to end.
When you are stationed at Cannon, (if you're married w/children) you have a family to worry about and you have to look after them: housing, schools, shopping, entertainment, neighborhoods, etc.
I apologize for my verbiage in advance, but when I read comments such as yours, the old NCO in me comes out. Sorry, but part of being a GI is complaining. OK? GI's have always complained and always will. When your "employer" tells you where to work, when to work, how to wear your hair, what clothes to wear, how much you can weigh, how fast you have to run, etc. you should be entitled to complain. AND yes, Clovis does owe the military...a lot. The military doesn't owe Clovis JACK.
AND, please don't tell me that it's their choice and that they signed on the dotted line. Yes, they chose that way of life, but they are human beings and they are nobody's slaves. The civilians should be grateful that they did. The GI's, and their families, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. When the troops return to US soil after long deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other godforsaken places to which they go, they deserve to come back to a semi decent place to live and enjoy their families. Whether you or others refuse to admit or see it, Clovis is not such a place. Clovis is depressing, and our GI's suffer enough of that overseas.
Every time a "Clovisite" posts a "if you don't like it here, then leave" message on the web, I print it and save it in a folder. The next time Cannon gets placed on the BRAC list, I am going to send a letter with those messages to the commission.
If the people in Clovis and Portales want to keep their towns "small and quaint" that is their prerogative, but LET THE BASE GO. When Cannon was on the BRAC list in 2005, both towns WHINED to high heaven. Go ahead and Google "Operation Keep Cannon" and read all the whining.
If the towns want to keep Cannon, then they need to clean up their act (and the town, and the county) and get with the program. Otherwise, let go off the government teat and the entitlement attitude.
I guess it's OK for the town folks to WHINE about closing Cannon, but it is not OK for the GI's to COMPLAIN about Clovis.

Ed Nurse if I ever meet you... I am going to kiss you on the mouth!
You have this way of saying what so many people feel and have tried to say, and yet get shut down by others. Its a fine line one has to walk on any forum.
You are awesome!

I am in a different position than you. I left the military a while back, but I am not a retiree. I don't work for the government either. Yet, I am a hard working, law abiding taxpayer and I get really infuriated when, in my view, military members, and their families, are disrespected.
Some people forget where they came from and where they've been and are incapable of putting themselves in other people's shoes.
Well, I remember all the crap that military members have to endure and I will stand up for them every chance I get. That is my particular way of "supporting our troops".

You are so very right about Clovis...it is a dirty little town...absolutely nothing for the kids to do and for that matter...nothing for the adults unless you are a drinker....wallyworld was allowed to build and that took out all the little grocery stores...the medical here leaves a lot to be desired...we desperately need more markets...wallyworld carries only what the other grocery stores leave it seems...am so tired of getting bad food from them and they vary rarely carry the same item for over a few days...and only the brands they sell at their sams clubs...

My dad and I signed a petition to CLOSE Cannon AFB. EDNurse, you've got it nailed to a T. The only good thing I have to say about Clovis/Portales is that had my dad not been stationed here, I may not have ever met my best friends... So it's not ALL bad... Just gotta find your place.

I agree!! We've had so many of our things stolen from us since we've lived here up in 801, no police will deal with us, not even the SP's come up here. I see some pretty bad stuff going on around here.

Please don't put Portales, Melrose, and other places in the same boat as Clovis. Many of us living in Portales or Melrose or the boonies around Cannon also do not like Clovis for the ugly sprawl, gehtto south side, and the greedy situation with homes up there. Clovis has done it to themselves. At least Portales and little Melrose is not run a a group of thugs and the cities seems to have some idea of how to orgnaize the towns, although it would be great if the university were bigger and there were a lot more homes and apartments to choose from.
Yes there is a lot missing in Portales but there is also a lot that Clovis does not have, like regular culture at ENMU if you are willing to walk onto the campus or get on the web site Eastern New Mexico University and go out to a few events. It is also obviously safer in Portales.
We sometimes spend several weeks at a time NOT going to Clovis, but shopping local and then occasionally driving less than 2 hours to Lubbock, which is a great town to shop in. A quick overnight to Lubbock or a long weekend in the Santa Fe or Ruidoso area can keep everything in perspective - and there is no need to spend a dime in Clovis.

I have read the previous posts and everyone has their opinion of Clovis. I grew up there, left when I was 18 and joind the Army. About 10 years ago I moved back to the ugliest/junkiest town in NM, Clovis. It didn't take me long to leave again. I was lucky to find a government civilian position here in Abilene Texas. I was recently offered a position back at Cannon and quickly declined. Clovis does not deserve Cannon. They haven't got enough housing to support the base and housing that is built is priced to gouge the airmen and women. It is no wonder the Airman call that road between Texico and Clovis the Trail of Tears. As far as medical care, the hospital is a place to die, not to get competent care. Luckily we got my mother out of there before she died because they couldn't even identify a staff infection. And don't get me started on the sorry roads in Clovis. The only redeeming factor in Clovis is Faith Christian Family Church. That would be the only reason we would even thing about coming back. I am one of the people that that took the advice and left cause I didn't like it.
